Nuremberg Vocational School wins 2025 Sustainability Award for Education!
What a great success for the vocational school 12 in Nuremberg! This institution recently won the city's 2025 Sustainability Award. The project has the evocative name “Taking Responsibility” and focuses on cross-generational exchange, which is promoted through cooperation with the Sebastian Hospital. This not only promotes education, but also strengthens coexistence in the city. The school was able to look forward to prize money of 2,000 euros, which will certainly encourage the committed participants in their work. Further awards were given to the Vocational School 5, the Hummelsteiner Weg Middle School, the Schlössleinsgasse Middle School and the State Vocational High School, which shows that there is a lot of potential in sustainable education in Nuremberg.
The jury, consisting of representatives of the city and Sparkasse Nuremberg, evaluated the schools' commitment from the perspective of inclusion and sustainable community. School representative Cornelia Trinkl (CSU) agreed and emphasized the potential that education has to bring about social change. Beate Treffkorn from Sparkasse emphasized the importance of such initiatives for urban coexistence. The Sustainability Prize is based on the UN Sustainability Goals and is awarded annually, which underlines the ongoing relevance of the topics.
A prize with a wide reach
The Sustainability Prize is part of the German Sustainability Prize (DNP), which is considered the most comprehensive prize of its kind in Europe. The event attracts around 3,000 guests annually and includes several competitions that address important transformation areas such as climate, biodiversity, resources and society. The DNP is awarded as part of the German Sustainability Day, an event that has become the leading congress for sustainability since 2008 and attracts more than 150 speakers.
The main aim of the DNP is to promote sustainable development. The independent and objective awarding of the award is based on demanding assessments and an interactive transfer of know-how. The aim is not only to strengthen the participating organizations, but also to provide an effective impetus for the transformation of society as a whole.
Education as the key to sustainable development
Another exciting aspect of the topic is the “National Prize – Education for Sustainable Development”, which will be awarded in 2025 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in collaboration with the German UNESCO Commission. Interested parties can submit proposals until September 15, 2024 to honor initiatives that contribute significantly to achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Ten winners will be selected and each of them can look forward to 10,000 euros.
The award as part of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is intended to enable people to make future-oriented decisions. The UNESCO ESD 2030 program aims to anchor education more sustainably in our education system - a goal that could by no means be more important today.
As you can see, there is a lot of commitment in the region to sustainable education and initiatives that not only promote learning, but also strengthen social interaction. According to the latest developments, it is clear: There is something going on in the world of education!
