Citizen participation on Gerostrasse: Your opinion counts now!

It starts on September 1st: The citizens of the city of Brandenburg an der Havel are invited to actively participate in the further development of the urban development plan for Gerostrasse. The process takes place via the participation platform Adhocracy Plus, where everyone can express their opinions in the comment column and submit suggestions for design. Meetingpoint Brandenburg reports.

In order to enter into direct dialogue, the city administration is organizing an information event in the North High School on September 11th at 5 p.m. Here, citizens have the opportunity to ask their questions about the planned Gerostrasse measure. In the first week after the summer holidays, the urban development and roads and bridges departments will present the current status of planning and explain what will happen next.

Focus on traffic development

In recent years, traffic in Brandenburg has increased noticeably, which has led to increased traffic jams in the existing traffic route on the L98, which includes Willi-Sänger-Straße and Brielower Straße. Therefore, a new traffic planning plan was commissioned, which not only examines the effects on the surrounding area, but also develops concrete suggestions for improvement. The city of Brandenburg provides information about this.

The development of an urban development concept for Gerostrasse is already underway. For this purpose, needs for action and general conditions are recorded. Citizen participation began with walks along Gerostraße, which took place on October 14, 2022. These walks, during which the city administration and the city planning office “die raumplaner” accompanied, offered the participants the opportunity to ask questions and contribute suggestions for future development.

Citizen participation on multiple levels

Modern transport planning and infrastructure projects require close cooperation between planners and citizens. Good citizen participation plays a crucial role, like that Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure emphasized. It states that in the past many citizens have felt that they were not sufficiently involved in decisions, which can lead to protests and resistance. A handbook for good citizen participation therefore offers suggestions for better public involvement, both formally and informally.

The handbook, which is based on a detailed analysis of transport projects, recommends early involvement of citizens and clear, understandable communication of the planning processes. These approaches are intended to ensure that all actors are informed in a timely manner and actively involved in the process.

In summary, it can be said that the city of Brandenburg an der Havel is taking an important step towards citizen-oriented planning. By encouraging dialogue and giving citizens the opportunity to contribute their ideas and concerns, it will ensure that the future development of Gerostrasse meets the needs of residents.
