Humboldt rediscovered: Blankenstein reveals his expeditions in Brandenburg!

On July 17, 2025, the doors of the Brandenburg State Archaeological Museum will be wide open for an exciting event. Historian David Blankenstein brings to life the fascinating expeditions of the famous naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. As part of this year's Archaeotechnica Blankenstein presents the outstanding achievements of Humboldt, who traveled to North, Central and South America as well as parts of Russia up to the Altai Mountains at the beginning of the 19th century. His travel reports and observations on the flora and fauna were groundbreaking and led to numerous scientific publications.

What made Humboldt so special? He wasn't just a pure explorer; He was a pioneer who laid the foundations for modern biogeography with his work. This is evident not only in his travels, but also in the important publications he wrote after moving to Paris, where he lived for 23 years and wrote 30 volumes about his studies. Blankenstein has created a detailed overview of the routes Humboldt took and the various insights he brought with him.

Upcoming events and admission prices

Archäotechnica will take place on July 26th and 27th, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For a small fee, adults can immerse themselves in the world of Humboldt for 5 euros, while reduced tickets are available for 3.50 euros. The Humboldt Foundation and its mission

Parallel to this fascinating event is the Humboldt Foundation In 2025, a new strategy entitled “Resilient Science for a Changing World” will be implemented. The aim is to strengthen research in Germany and promote democratic values. Every year, 900 outstanding scientists are invited to Germany. The foundation values academic freedom and is committed to science diplomacy both at home and abroad.

The challenges facing the world require global approaches. The foundation therefore supports local initiatives, especially in countries in the Global South, to find solutions to major problems such as climate change. The Humboldt Network, which enables scientific collaborations worldwide, plays an important role here.

The legacy of Alexander von Humboldt

Alexander von Humboldt's explorations are not only historically significant, but they continue to shape much of what we know about the Earth today. Born in Berlin in 1769, he was a visionary whose discoveries ranged from meteorological research to botanical geography. Actually, his life's work is about much more than just scientific discoveries; it's about the combination of knowledge and a sense of responsibility towards nature and society.

Humboldt lived until 1859 and left behind a variety of geographical names such as the Humboldt squid in South America and the Pico Humboldt in Venezuela. His name is also immortalized on the moon with the Mare Humboldtianum. He remains a role model for anyone interested in science and the pursuit of knowledge.

Archäotechnica and the Humboldt Foundation's accompanying initiatives provide a perfect setting to celebrate Humboldt's legacy and honor his philosophy of communicating science.
