More safety for students: New LED lighting in Brandenburg!

Many cities are working on the safety of school routes, and now the city of Brandenburg an der Havel is also following suit. With an investment of around 80,000 euros, the city is ensuring more light at two important pedestrian crossings. The new mast lights were installed at the intersections of Jacobstrasse and Wilhelmsdorfer Strasse to increase the safety of school children. The city recently reported that these lights are equipped with warm white LED light that not only backlights the crossing areas, but also the areas in front of and behind them. City of Brandenburg an der Havel explains that the aim of these measures is to make pedestrians visible to drivers at an early stage.

The young engineer Leon Beschorner from the civil engineering team led the work. There are several schools, daycare centers and a retirement home in the area around the new lighting, which is why this investment is particularly important. Safety on the way to school is a big issue, and children are particularly at risk at dusk and darkness. The DGUV highlights that the risk of accidents for cyclists and pedestrians can be reduced by half through increased visibility.

Important tips for more security

Parents are required to provide their children with the best possible equipment on the way to school. Helmets and bright, retro-reflective clothing and bags should be standard. Bright colors create a contrast to the background and significantly increase visibility. The Baden-Württemberg traffic police However, warns that particularly dark clothing, as is often worn in the autumn and winter months, increases the risk of accidents.

Especially in unfavorable weather conditions, such as rain or fog, drivers often find it difficult to recognize pedestrians in time. Statistics show that from November to January a third more pedestrians are injured than the annual average. Bright and reflective clothing can certainly save lives here, as it is visible up to 140 meters as long as it meets the standard according to DIN EN ISO 20471:2017.

The LED lights installed in Brandenburg are a step in the right direction to minimize the risk for children on the way to school. It is now up to parents to support these measures and equip their children accordingly. This ensures that the little ones come to school safely and visibly.
