With Trabi and Dübener Egg: Brandenburg's vintage car couple on tour!
With a touch of nostalgia and a large portion of passion, Michael Scheuba and his wife from Brandenburg an der Havel discovered the adventure of “vintage car travel” for themselves. Your faithful companion is a Trabant 500/2 from 1962, a classic that makes the hearts of many vintage car fans beat faster. What makes the whole thing particularly charming is her caravan Düben egg, whose history dates back to the 1930s. Originally developed by Max Würdig, this caravan impresses with its streamlined shape and lightweight construction.
The Scheubas have deliberately excluded the coasts and mountains from their excursions and instead concentrate on classic car meetings and charming campsites. “Driving the Trabant and the caravan is not only relaxing, but also saves on fuel consumption,” explains Michael, who discovered his love for old technology over twelve years ago. His half Trabant, which he acquired from Leipzig, shows a creative idea; He quickly converted it into a trailer.
A journey through time
The Trabant 500 that Michael bought a decade ago is a real first-hand gem that is in excellent condition. And that too Düben egg, which came into her possession in 2018, has been lovingly renovated and has been back on the road since 2020. Originally designed as a single-axle trailer, the caravan weighs only 270 to 300 kg and, despite its reduced size, offers charming features: a gas hob, a wardrobe and a cozy seating area that can be converted into a double lounger - perfect for romantic nights under the stars.
The tradition of camping with vintage cars is diverse around the world. In the United States, models such as the Airstream travel trailers revolutionized the camping experience in the 1920s and 1930s Düben egg is considered an unforgettable era of German camping culture. Even today, vintage cars are in high demand at events, and the Dübener Egg has won a place in the hearts of many campers.
A look into the future
In order not to have to forego the usual comfort on longer trips, the Scheubas use a Mercedes with a larger caravan that has a toilet and shower. But the real joy comes from their short trips, where they can appreciate the conviviality of other classic car lovers. At the end of August they are planning a tour to the Ketzin campsite to meet like-minded people and share their enthusiasm for old technology.
For Michael it is more than just a hobby. It is a living connection to the past and a way to rediscover the simplicity and adventure of travel. The joy of driving and meeting like-minded people make every tour an unforgettable experience. Because when you return to the past you often discover the joy of the present.
