Winnetou of the East: Gojko Mitic celebrates his 85th birthday in a riverboat!
A very special birthday is being celebrated today in the “Riverboat”: Gojko Mitic, who is known as the “Winnetou of the East”, turns 85 years old. Mitic enjoyed great popularity from the 1960s to the 1980s, especially through his role in the legendary DEFA films. These adventurous stories addressed the resistance of the indigenous peoples against white invaders and made the Yugoslavian a cult star in the GDR, where he appeared in 12 of the 14 Indian films produced, as MDR reports.
The DEFA Indian films, also known as “Red Westerns”, were produced by the DEFA film studio between 1966 and 1983. Not only did they cement Mitic's reputation, but they also contributed to the cultural identity of the time. His charisma and unforgettable films such as “The Sons of the Great Bear” and “Chingachgook, the Great Snake” influenced several generations. Mitic reflects on the meaning of these films and his personal journey in an interview today.
Sporting successes and anniversaries
A little removed from the celebratory background of the “Riverboat”, we can also note the sporting triumph of SC Magdeburg. Coach Bennet Wiegert won the Champions League with his team! In a thrilling final, the SCM defeated the Füchse Berlin 32:26. Wiegert is not only celebrating the title, but also his tenth anniversary as coach in Magdeburg. The club's sporting achievements solidify its position in the handball scene, as MDR highlights.
Another notable event is the closure of Birgit Fischer's canoe school. The canoeing legend, who has won eight Olympic gold and four silver medals, decided to spend more time with her family and grandchildren. Fischer, who was celebrated as both the youngest and oldest Olympic champion in her sport, has had an impressive career and will continue to enjoy the pleasures of life outside of competition.
Culture and entertainment
Hans-Timm “Timsen” Hinrichsen from Santiano is causing a stir in the music scene with his solo album “Vun hier”. His album not only presents Low German lyrics, but also duets with various artists. A very special highlight is the song “Lebenszeit”, which will be presented in the “Riverboat” studio. Peggy March is also celebrating her 60th anniversary in the music business. On the occasion of this special event, she released a new version of her hit “At 17, you still have dreams,” reminiscent of her illustrious career.
There is also news on the television side: Vanessa Rottenburg will be the new chief physician Dr. Lucia Böhm in the popular MDR series “In aller Friendship”. With her varied career, she brings a breath of fresh air to the series. In addition, Bettina Schliephake-Burchardt will ensure culinary highlights as a juror on “The Great Baking” – a truly relevant personality in the culinary industry.
Last but not least, the new live entertainment show “Get Your Show!” moderated by Felix Seibert-Daiker, Peter Imhof and Julia Krüger. This show brings back a bit of home feeling by taking place in small towns and telling real stories of village choirs and the people. A real community experience with a cozy campfire atmosphere!
