FC Energie Cottbus faces an exciting DFB Cup game against Hannover 96, which kicks off next Saturday at 6 p.m. For the fans, it is not just another game, but a return to the roots that are deeply anchored in the club's history. Detlef Irrgang, former striker and hero in the 1997 promotion game, remembers all too well the legendary duel when the floodlights failed during the game and the game had to be interrupted for twelve minutes. Cottbus started with a solid score of four points from the first two third division games, while Hannover 96 started the season strongly in the second division and won both of their first games. Irrgang, who now runs an agency for sports medical insurance for amateur football players, is nevertheless optimistic about the current situation at FC Energie. A look back at historical moments
The decisive game at Hannover 96 in 1997 will never be forgotten. The dramatic floodlight failure in the 61st minute and the subsequent euphoria of the Cottbus fans are vividly remembered. Irrgang remembers that Jens Melzig's sending off was considered the turning point of the game after Cottbus scored the opening goal and ultimately won 3-1. In addition to the historic promotion, the club managed to reach the DFB Cup final just a few days later, where they lost 2-0 in the final against VfB Stuttgart. The “Ascension Heroes” event
Another special event will take place at the Friendship Stadium on May 27th. It is organized by the Lausitzer Legenden and FC Energie and celebrates the 20th anniversary of the first promotion to German professional football as well as the DFB Cup final in 1997. The event will be a gathering of the heroes from back then, which many fans and players are looking forward to.
