Cottbus Film Festival 2025: A festival full of surprises!

Welcome to the 35th Film Festival in Cottbus! On Tuesday, November 3rd, 2025, there will be a colorful program that will delight the cineastes of this region. How rbb24.de reports, the festival shows a total of 141 films from over 40 countries and places particular emphasis on a wide selection. In order to meet the needs of the jury, the number of films in this edition has been slightly reduced.

This year there are ten films to choose from in the “Feature Film” competition section, while a total of 13 sections offer exciting insights into the world of film. A real highlight is the “Close-up” section, which puts Estonia in the spotlight. Estonian films that shed light on everyday life and the history of the Baltic country are particularly strong here. Seven short Estonian productions will be presented as part of the “Estonian Shorts” program.

Diverse sections and exciting topics

It's not just the Estonian contributions that catch the eye. New to the program is the “Don’t call me Vintage!” section, in which four films from the 1980s are viewed from a female perspective. This gives the festival a refreshing touch. Visitors can also look forward to the “Cottbus Masters” section, which shows works by well-known directors who are not in the competition. Another highlight is the newly introduced “Midnight Madness” section, which is dedicated to horror, science fiction and fantasy – ideal for the night spirits among film lovers!

This year the festival will take place in several venues. The central Cottbus town hall is not used; instead, the performances take place in the chamber stage of the Cottbus State Theater, in the Gladhouse and in the Weltspiegel cinema. The opening in the Great Hall of the Cottbus State Theater will be celebrated with the biopic “Duchoň” about the Slovakian pop star Karol Duchoň. An event that will certainly attract many visitors.

The film festival is not only a highlight for film lovers, but also a social event. During the festival there are not only film screenings, but also stimulating discussions with filmmakers and various events that promote exchange. The Lubinas awards ceremony will also take place on Saturday evening in the Piccolo children's and youth theater - another date that cinephiles should note!
