Hannover 96 before the DFB Cup duel: memories of the floodlight debacle!

Football will be exciting again in the coming months - not least for the fans of Hannover 96. The traditional club from Lower Saxony will face third division team Energie Cottbus in the first round of the DFB Cup. The duel will take place between August 15th and 18th, but the exact kick-off time is still to be determined. This reunion contains a lot of history, as the two teams faced each other in a memorable relegation game 25 years ago.

The DFB Cup, which has been held annually by the German Football Association (DFB) since its founding in 1935, is considered the second highest title in German club football after the championship. The cup is a special challenge for Hannover 96: Last year they had to give up in the first round against Bielefeld (0:2). Cottbus, on the other hand, put in a respectable performance in the 3rd league last season and only narrowly missed out on promotion relegation to the 2nd league.

A historic encounter

As Hannover 96 sports boss Marcus Mann emphasizes, Cottbus showed a strong performance last season. In a dramatic promotion battle, the Cottbus team had to admit defeat against Ingolstadt (1:4) on the last match day and therefore lost third place to Saarbrücken. They in turn had to admit defeat in the relegation to Braunschweig (0:2, 2:2). The historical review of the relegation in 1997 will also color the encounter. Back then, Hannover 96 lost the second leg in Cottbus after a mysterious power outage.

Back to the facts: In the direct duel, the DFB Cup has a clear mode. Over 64 participants will fight for the trophy in a knockout system. The home right for lower-class teams is an additional pound that Cottbus can throw into the balance. Robert Kalem, a former Hannover 96 player, has drawn a "dream draw" in the draw, with Bayern Munich facing third division side SV Wehen Wiesbaden, while defending champions Stuttgart enter the competition later.

The focus on the present

It will be seen by August 15th at the latest whether Hannover 96 were able to learn from last year's bitter experience. Like many other lower league clubs, Cottbus could also benefit from the financial rewards of the DFB Cup. The DFB Cup is not only a sporting highlight, but also a lucrative source of income, especially for smaller clubs that enter the race with high expectations.

Now it remains to be seen how these two teams will perform after the last few seasons and whether they can build on their past performance. The tension is rising and hopes are resting on the shoulders of the players, who now have to give everything to advance to the DFB Cup.
