Königs Wusterhausen: New shine for the old flower kiosk at the train station!
In Königs Wusterhausen the search is currently underway for creative ideas for the future of the former flower kiosk on the station forecourt. The structure, which was run by Monika and Manfred Genz for a long time, has been empty since 2020. The shutters have since been pulled down and graffiti has left its mark on the appearance, but the kiosk remains in good structural condition. The city administration has now taken the initiative and is planning a renovation and a new use for the building, which, with its central location, offers an exciting opportunity for citizens.
A collection of ideas was started as early as May 2023 as part of the Urban Development Funding Day. Around 20 committed residents submitted suggestions. The ideas range from a travel agency to an information center and a new flower shop to a “club showcase” that is intended to present the activities of local clubs and recruit volunteers. Currently, the last flower shop in the city center, Königs Floristik, has closed in 2021, increasing the demand for a new floral offering.
Renovation and financing
The city administration favors the idea of a club center to offer local organizations a platform. The current use permit only allows for an office facility. But don't worry, the city now wants to change this impairment. Financing options to cover the renovation costs are currently being examined, with the city hoping for funding to move the project forward.
As part of urban development, the municipality uses approaches such as the land use plan (FNP) and the development plan (B-Plan) to advance structured planning. The FNP specifies the rough usage intentions, while the B-Plan contains detailed regulations for the permitted uses on certain areas. This ensures that citizens' opinions are heard in the planning process. Public participation also plays an important role in involving residents in the process.
Urban development funding in focus
Particularly strong support comes from the federal government's urban development funding, which has existed for over 50 years and stands for sustainable urban development. A whopping 790 million euros are available in the 2024 federal budget to eliminate urban development problems and strengthen inner cities. The “Living Centers” and “Social Cohesion” programs show that this funding aims to sustainably strengthen the social and economic structure of the communities.
The return to local development and the creation of vibrant environments is particularly relevant in times like these. The former flower kiosk at the train station could become a central element of the new inner city design. The city hopes to give its citizens back some quality of life through appropriate measures. With the upcoming planning, it remains to be seen how the ideas will be pursued and which projects can ultimately be realized.
