Leverkusen: No. 1 in Germany for new business registrations!
The Dahme-Spreewald district will improve in the NUI ranking in 2024 and rise to 13th place for new business registrations in Germany.

Leverkusen: No. 1 in Germany for new business registrations!
Leverkusen has positioned itself as the leading location for new commercial businesses in Germany in 2024. The city recorded the most new businesses per 10,000 working-age residents, with an impressive New Entrepreneurship Initiative (NUI) score of 254.5. This reports rp online. Directly behind Leverkusen are the district of Munich with 242.9 and the independent city of Offenbach am Main, which were also able to generate over 200 new businesses per 10,000 inhabitants.
The NUI indicator therefore offers an exciting insight into the regional propensity to start up businesses and measures the number of newly registered businesses. As is well known, the IfM Bonn is the initiator of this ranking, which has been created annually since 1998 to make the entrepreneurial spirit in Germany visible. The NUI value for 2024 is 136.0 on average for all 400 districts and cities and has therefore improved significantly from the pre-pandemic level of 124.7 IfM Bonn.
The rising stars among the cities
As far as the newcomers are concerned, Cologne has worked its way up from 76th place to a remarkable 19th place. Koblenz was even able to take a top spot by jumping from 98th to 18th place. Other cities that ended up in the top 20 are Düsseldorf and Kempten. What is particularly striking is that districts like Dahme-Spreewald made a strong jump from 68th place to 13th. A total of 20 districts and independent cities have risen significantly in the ranking, while the general conditions for founding companies may also have changed, as some analyzes suggest.
A look at new start-ups in Germany shows that the numbers are on a positive trend overall. In 2024, around 594,500 new businesses were registered, which corresponds to a slight increase of 0.2% compared to the previous year. Larger companies are also enjoying growing popularity: In this segment there was an increase of 2.1% in new establishments, which corresponds to around 120,900 new larger companies. These figures come from a comprehensive survey by the Federal Statistical Office.
Advocate of the start-up culture
These developments impressively show that the start-up culture is flourishing in Germany, especially in cities like Leverkusen and Cologne. Despite global economic uncertainty, the Germans' innovative strength and entrepreneurial spirit remain unbroken. It will be exciting to see how these trends will develop in the coming years and which city will be targeting the top positions next.
