New REWE in Schmöckwitz: The supermarket of the future opens doors!
The new REWE store will open in Schmöckwitz on Thursday after more than a year of construction. The time without shopping options was not easy for commuters and residents; after all, they had to do without their usual shopping options for 15 months. Now you can look forward to more than 20,000 products, including many organic and plant-based foods, all in a resource-saving and CO₂-neutral market. Merchants Daniela and Kevin Korthals manage the new store with a team of 40 employees to serve and satisfy customers. According to maz-online.de not only standard goods are offered, but a new shopping experience is also created.
The new building is another example of REWE's commitment to sustainability. Construction work began on July 11, 2023 for this most energy-efficient supermarket, which meets the high standards for new buildings. REWE is investing over seven million euros in this project, which not only includes environmentally friendly building materials and a sustainable energy supply, but is also equipped with a 100 kWp photovoltaic system on the roof. This market will use about half as much energy as required by law, giving it a clear advantage compared to conventional markets. Architekturblatt.de highlights that REWE has successfully developed green buildings since 2009, and this market is now set to become the 15th in Berlin.
A modern supermarket for everyone
The design of this new REWE store is particularly appealing. The market covers an area of 5,000 square meters and extends over two floors and offers a sales area of 1,800 square meters on the upper floor. Here customers will find a large selection of fresh products, including an extensive fruit and vegetable section, a salad bar and several service counters. There will also be four cash registers and five self-checkout terminals to make paying easier. The entire building will be equipped with glazed cooling shelves, LED lighting and a high proportion of wood, which further emphasizes its environmental friendliness.
The travel options have also been taken into account - with 75 parking spaces for cars, 58 for bicycles and 19 for cargo bikes. The two charging stations with four charging points for electric cars are particularly innovative, improving the connection to modern mobility. A green retention roof will also serve to store and evaporate rainwater. These environmentally friendly measures clearly show that awareness of sustainability is not only anchored in the range, but also in the construction.
Regional developments in context
The opening of the REWE store comes at a time when the region is facing further changes. District Administrator Sven Herzberger is planning a restructuring of the district administration in Dahme-Spreewald, which is being rejected by the AfD and the SPD large parliamentary group. The new main statute is to be decided in the district council next week. At the same time, numerous construction works will begin in Berlin and Brandenburg at the start of the summer holidays, which will severely impact commuter and travel traffic.
So anyone who wants to shop in Schmöckwitz from Thursday will not only receive modern products and a well-thought-out concept, but will also contribute to promoting sustainability. One more good reason to stop by regularly despite the construction work in the area and discover the new products in the new REWE store!
