City cycling 2025: Lübben cycles for climate and health!
City cycling 2025 started in Lübben on June 21st with an inspiring opening tour of 30 kilometers. Many cyclists, including representatives of the city of Lübben and the communities of Eichwalde and Schulzendorf, followed the call and pedaled. More than 40 participants completed the tour via Hartmannsdorf, Schlepzig, Krausnick and Lubolz to Lübben in a great sense of community. A stop in Hartmannsdorf, where a bicycle repair station was presented, and a cool refreshment in Schlepzig made the day perfect. Loud Niederlausitz Current The head of the building and urban planning department, Andreas Kozur, and other mayors were also present at this event.
Participants have until July 11th to collect as many kilometers as possible. And there is a good reason for this: the aim is to promote cycling and at the same time make a contribution to climate protection. The Dahme-Spreewald district is taking part in this campaign for the ninth time. The importance of this event is also highlighted by Radiocottbus emphasizes, indicating the possibility of participating as an individual, as a team or even as a community.
A climate commitment with vision
Last year, 2,495 participants were able to cycle an astonishing 430,510 kilometers, saving 71 tons of CO₂. Not bad, right? A goal is even being set for 2025 that will exceed this already record-breaking success. The project clearly shows how important cycling is not only for health, but also for quality of life. With an element popular with young people such as online or app registration, the goals become even more tangible.
But apart from that, what is happening in the area of cycling in general? According to a current study commissioned by the General German Bicycle Club e.V. (ADFC), greenhouse gas emissions in Germany could be reduced by 34% by 2035 through a massively increased share of cycling. That would be a real win for the climate! So far, the proportion of cycling traffic on journeys of up to 30 kilometers is only around 13% - so there is still a lot of room for improvement here. ZDF today describes that this transformation requires a “welcoming infrastructure” to incentivize and switch.
A look into the future
If Germany wants to become a “bicycle country”, as stated in the coalition agreement, faster progress is necessary. Cities like Copenhagen, Utrecht and Antwerp show how it can be done: with wide cycle paths and political support. In a European comparison, Germany only shines as number five in the ranking of cycle path networks.
But local events such as city cycling also show that there is a lot going on - here in Lübben too! The organizers are calling on all interested municipalities to register so that they can work together with the region to ensure more cycling and protect the environment.
