Bad Salzhausen celebrates Spinone Italiano: clever, charming and versatile!
Last weekend Bad Salzhausen was dominated by Spinone Italiano. The first major event of the Spinone Italiano Club Germany (SICD) attracted 32 of these charming dogs and their families from Germany, Belgium and Slovenia to the picturesque spa town. During the club weekend, visitors were given the opportunity to take part in workshops on grooming and hunting training to learn more about this versatile companion. A dog show crowned the event and highlighted the beauty and character of the Spinones, also known as Italian pointers.
The Spinone Italiano is a hunting dog breed that is well suited as a loyal companion for the whole family. Originally bred for bird hunting in thorny undergrowth, the name “Spinone” is no coincidence – it comes from the Italian word for “thorns”. Known for their loyalty and friendliness, these inquisitive dogs show a remarkable bond with humans. Their athleticism allows them to thrive in both hunting and outdoor activities such as hiking. However, Spinones feel most comfortable in a family environment and are not the best candidates for living in small apartments.
Skins, care and training
An exciting aspect of the event was the intensive discussion of spinone fur care. Their robust, rough and weatherproof coat requires regular care. Experts recommend brushing dogs thoroughly at least twice a week to remove mats and loose hair. It is important to pay particular attention to the longer hair on the ears, face and legs. The fur even has a self-cleaning effect, so a bath every few months is usually enough, unless it is very dirty. Bathing too frequently can damage the coat's natural oils, so it should be used with caution.
Training plays an essential role in the life of a Spinone. These intelligent dogs require positive training to develop their innate abilities. Some of the Spinones present are not only loyal housemates, but also rescue dogs in relay groups, where they are used, among other things, for area searches and as mantrailers. Veterinarian Sonja Schmitt describes Spinones as pleasant and relaxed companions who enjoy spending time with their family.
Health and nutrition
The health of these charming dogs was also discussed, because like many breeds, Spinones are prone to some health problems. These include, among other things, hip dysplasia and ear infections. Regular vet visits are important, as is a balanced diet tailored to their size and energy levels. They should also have suitable retreats and activities to avoid separation anxiety.
Overall, the club weekend in Bad Salzhausen not only promoted knowledge about the Spinone Italiano, but also created a strong sense of community among the owners and lovers of this special dog breed. The versatility and adaptability of Spinones make them ideal companions, be it as a working or family dog - the main thing is that their skills are encouraged and valued.
