Doberlug-Kirchhain: Historic train station gets new life with a million-dollar plan!

Big changes are coming in Doberlug-Kirchhain: the station building there, a truly historic building from 1875 to 1878, is undergoing extensive renovation. In the heart of Brandenburg's twin city, the Elbe-Elster district, around 2,000 commuters pass by every day, but the main building has been empty for a long time and is no longer in the best condition. The city acquired the building in 2019 and now plans to give it a new lease of life. How rbb24 reports, initial public discussions have already produced new usage ideas, including a co-working space and apartments for trainees.

The conversion of the station building is a large project that is being led by Stephan Wilhelm, Managing Director of Bahnstadt GmbH. Measures are planned in three areas: the main building, the surrounding area and the upper floors. There will be space for cultural and event rooms here, while apartments for trainees will be built on the third floor. The entire project is under monument protection, which brings with it particular challenges.

Construction challenges and financial conditions

The technical analysis shows that the building is dilapidated and partially infested with mold. Architect Patrick Kühnast expects the building to be completely gutted in order to preserve the historical heritage and at the same time integrate contemporary usage concepts. A report examining the wooden components used will help to check the statics and safety of the house. The city plans to submit relevant building permit documents by the end of next year, with the goal of completing construction by 2030. The costs? Around 11.5 million euros, which are to be financed through the Lausitz Structural Development program, but are not fully covered for the time being.

Interestingly, the history of Doberlug-Kirchhain station is shaped by its strategic location as a crossing station between the Halle-Cottbus and Berlin-Dresden railway lines. The location advantages are clear: With its tracks and platforms, the station has a major influence on the mobility of the region. The barrier-free renovation of the station has been an issue since 2007, and as part of the current renovation, barrier-free access to the platforms is to be created. In addition to tracks 1 and 3, which are directly accessible, access to tracks 2 and 4 should be made easier by stairs and elevators.

A look into the future

The planned renovation of the train station will not only improve the infrastructure, but also create an incentive for commuters and travelers. The modernization of train stations is part of a larger trend that is gradually finding its way into Germany. DB InfraGO pursues the nationwide goal of developing train stations into attractive places with a wide range of offerings. A good hand in implementation can help ensure that train stations are no longer just transport hubs, but also lively centers of social life.

In this context, sustainable planning and consideration of all traveler concerns is of central importance. The architects and planners are working to find a balance between functionality, aesthetics and diversity of use so that the redesign of Doberlug-Kirchhain train station can become a showcase project for future developments in the region.
