Electronic patient records: Chaos and security risks uncovered!
The introduction of the electronic patient record (ePA) began a little over two months ago, well, since the end of April, for doctors in Germany. Nevertheless, many not only in Cologne but also in Brandenburg have mixed feelings about the new solution. While the EHR is intended as a way to connect and improve patient care, it is met with plenty of criticism. Especially the family doctor Dr. Uwe Popert from Kassel puts it in a nutshell: “The whole thing is more of an unsorted pile of data without any tangible support for treatment.” He also expressed concerns about the maintenance and security of the stored data. Apparently, the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) has already identified security flaws that could potentially allow attackers to access sensitive data without the need for an electronic health card. But what does all this mean for patients?
The federal government, on the other hand, sees great potential in the ePA. How federalgovernment.de explains, the health data should be used pseudonymously, i.e. without personal information, in order, for example, to advance research and enable statistical evaluations. Insured persons can also object to the use of their health data at any time. However, the discussion about the ePA is not only evident in doctors' practices, but also in other areas of society. In Brandenburg, for example, the deportation of a Yazidi family from Lychen is currently being hotly debated, with the decision being sharply criticized by the Brandenburg Refugee Council.
Opinions on the ePA are divided
While some users are positive about electronic health records, there are also experts who note major security concerns. Similar to Popert, the CCC also calls for a serious review of security standards before the nationwide rollout of the ePA can continue. "The ePA must become more secure because it is about much more than just health data. It is about patient trust," said a CCC spokesman. According to the Federal Ministry of Health rwth-aachen.de Some measures to improve security have already been announced. gematik is working to resolve the security issues before full implementation so that doctors and patients can safely benefit from the possibilities of the ePA together.
Although the ePA issue is only one point in the region's current news, it is attracting a lot of attention. Today, July 24th, 2025, Brandenburg welcomes the first days of vacation, and schools in 14 federal states have begun sending their students off for their well-deserved summer vacation. In the midst of all these events, the Pax Terra Musica festival also takes place in Friesack, an event that, however, faces persistent criticism.
In this mixed news situation, it remains to be seen how the discussion surrounding electronic patient records will develop. One thing is certain: the future of healthcare depends heavily on the willingness to make digital solutions truly safe and useful.
