Forest fire in Elbe-Elster: The all-clear has been given for citizens!
The all-clear was finally given in the Elbe-Elster region in Brandenburg today, July 10, 2025. The Lausitz control center informed at 7:36 a.m. that there was no longer any direct danger to the population. Already on July 2nd, a warning was issued due to a forest fire in Gohrischheide, Mühlber/E., Fichtenberg, Altenau, Weinberge, Burxdorf and Neuburxdorf. This forest fire recently covered an area of around 13 hectares, and several fire departments had been deployed for days to contain the flames [News.de].
The forest fire was discovered on Tuesday afternoon and quickly reached dangerous proportions, so that the fire department declared a major loss situation in the evening of the same day. More than 300 emergency services with 36 vehicles were deployed to fight the flames. But the danger was not just temporary; The temperatures rose above 30 degrees, which made extinguishing work even more difficult and increased the risk of further fires.
Evacuations and challenges
An evacuation had to be carried out in the small community of Kleinbahren, which has now been lifted. A total of 52 people had to temporarily leave their homes. Other forest fires in southern Brandenburg, including in Treuenbrietzen and Fichtenberg, have now been brought under control, according to Tagesschau.de.
Despite the successes in fighting the fire, three firefighters were injured during the operations. This shows once again how challenging and dangerous the work of the emergency services is, especially in areas that are considered “suspected ordnance” and where the cause of the fire is still unclear.
The forests are in danger
However, the situation is not just a local problem; Brandenburg has the highest risk of forest fires in Germany. This leads to increased awareness of wildfires facilitated by pine forests and other adverse conditions. According to Ble.de, the forest in Germany has various functions - it not only serves as a recreational area, but is also important for nature conservation and the economy.
Together with the federal administration, forest fire data has been collected and processed into statistics since the 1970s. The aim is to reduce the number and size of forest fires in the future through preventive measures. The data collected also enables forecasts and risk assessments in order to take targeted action in forest fire prevention and control.
What remains is the challenge of not only successfully fighting the current fires, but also finding long-term solutions to protect the forests and the people living in them. The population is still urged to be careful and not to take unnecessary risks.
