mpox, formerly known as a monkey, has gained attention in recent years. Since May 2022, cases have been registered in Germany and beyond, as the Ministry of Health in Potsdam confirmed. Overall, there have been two cases in Brandenburg since the beginning of the year, as tagesspiegel.de . The current case goes back to the MPOX virus of Klade IIB, which is particularly transmitted by close physical contact, especially during sex.

health situation and protective measures

The World Health Organization (WHO) already classified MPOX in February 2023 as a "health emergency of international scope". So far, however, there are no serious illnesses in Germany, and deaths have not yet occurred. However, it is recommended to offer certain groups of people, especially men who have sexual contacts with other men and often change their partners, to offer a vaccination against MPOX. Around 417 vaccine doses are stored in Brandenburg in order to be able to react to possible local outbursts, such as the Tagesschau reports.

The signs of infection are typically rashes, fever and muscle pain. In most cases, the course is mild and the patients relax well. However, the current infected person must remain isolated for at least 21 days until it is symptom -free and all skin changes have subsided.
