Fraudsters blackmail pensioner (86) with fake accident: 50,000 euros gone!
A disturbing incident reached us from Wustermark, in the Havelland district: an 86-year-old pensioner became the victim of a brazen scam. An unknown woman answered the phone and told the senior that her granddaughter had been involved in a fatal car accident. In order to free the granddaughter, who was allegedly in distress, from custody, the caller demanded a deposit of 50,000 euros. The report reports on this alarming situation Berlin courier.
Under intense pressure, the elderly woman collected all the cash she had at home and handed it over to an unknown man who was waiting on her doorstep. Although the exact amount was not the entire deposit, it was a significant amount. Ultimately, the granddaughter found out about the incident and contacted the police, who have now started an investigation.
What are shock calls?
The scam used here is known as a “shock call” - a method that, according to the Federal Criminal Police Office is being observed more and more frequently. Scammers pose as close relatives who are in distress, thereby creating immediate panic in the person being called. It is often alleged that a family member has committed a crime or caused a traffic accident, requiring immediate financial assistance.
The tactic is always the same: the callers put their victims under massive pressure, often in the form of threats or emotional manipulation, to pressure them into making quick and rash decisions. This often involves several perpetrators, each taking on the role of a family member and a supposed police officer in order to strengthen credibility.
How do you protect yourself?
The police warn that no authority in Germany ever demands money or valuables over the phone. Anyone who receives a call like this should hang up and contact the police immediately on 110. Further information about prevention is available on the website Police crime prevention.
