Glass fiber for Rathenow: 12 million euros for fast internet!

In Rathenow something is happening in the area of digital infrastructure! Deutsche Glasfaser Holding GmbH plans to invest vigorously in the city. Between 8 and 12 million euros are planned to create the connection for a sustainable internet supply. The modern FTTH technology (fibre to the home) is used. This means that the light wave conductors are laid to the living room of the customers, which ensures rapid internet speeds. The initial connections could be available in two years if everything goes according to plan. Mayor Jörg Zietemann is behind the project and has already distributed support letters to the citizens in order to inform them about the advantages. According to MAZ-ONLINE.de, an information event took place in the cultural center on June 24th, led by Alexander Goldmann.

The project manager Christof Milek makes it clear that the need for faster and reliable internet connection increases steadily. More and more devices in our households need WiFi, and you quickly notice how important a stable network is. However, the project is realized without government funding, which increases the challenge. The pressure to succeed is on the pre -marketing: By September 26, 2025, 33% of households in the expansion area must give an order so that the project is concluded. If this demand is missing, it will not be built.

local initiatives and developments

In parallel to these developments, the fiber optic plus, a joint venture from Deutsche Telekom and IFM Investors, also shows engagement for Rathenow. From 2023, the expansion of around 7,800 fiber optic connections for households and company locations was announced. This should enable residents to transmit stable data transmission at gigabit speed. For the expansion, fiber optic plus uses partly existing infrastructures of Telekom, which accelerates the process. In contrast to the German fiber optic, the expansion here is regardless of pre -marketing rates, which means that the network is also being built if there is not enough pre -registrations.

The advantage of this initiative is that the network gives citizens the choice between different telecommunications providers for the Internet, telephone and television. In the planned expansion phase, the connection of a property is free of charge if a fiber optic tariff is completed by a provider. According to this, costs that are estimated at Telekom with 799.95 euros can be incurred.

View of the overall market

But what about fiber optic expansion in Germany in general? According to Glasfaserinternet.info, we are within the EU with regard to the FTTH connections in the lower third. Where other countries are already far ahead, Germany is considered in the bottom. Currently, only 23 to 32% of households have access to FTTH connections, while in the EU average over 64% of households can access glass fiber. There is therefore a clear need for action to increase Germany's digital competitiveness.

Overall, however, the number of fiber optic access and Germany is one of the top 5 fastest growing EU nations in fiber optic expansion. Almost 43 million high-speed access with 1000 Mbit/s or more should be available at the end of 2023. Despite the obstacles, such as high costs for the expansion and competition through powerful cable networks, fiber optic expansion remains a central topic for rural regions.

Developments in Rathenow therefore show that it is also time to invest in the digital future. The progress is visible, but together the demand must be strengthened in order to use the opportunities of a nationwide supply.
