Renovation of the B102 in Rathenow: roundabout will be smaller, construction will start in 2026!

Things will soon become tangible in Rathenow: the renovation of federal highway 102, an important transport project, is in the starting blocks. A comprehensive renovation is planned to start in spring 2026. The Brandenburg State Road Agency is in charge of this. The main focus is on rebuilding the main roundabout on Berliner Straße, which will become smaller, meaning overtaking will no longer be possible. The roadway will be narrowed to improve traffic flow and increase safety. The first preparations, such as possible tree felling, are scheduled to begin in spring 2025.

Deputy Mayor Matthias Remus from the SPD has confirmed that the final planning has already been discussed and the contractual details have been negotiated. Despite several postponements of the original start of construction, which was initially planned for spring 2025, a Europe-wide tender process will now be necessary, which will take additional time. The entire construction process must also be coordinated with the contracted construction company.

Scope and costs of the renovation

The planned expansion of the B102 covers an approximately 800 meter long section and includes the renewal of the roadway, the road surface as well as the traffic islands and sidewalks. In addition, a new roundabout will be built at the intersection of Ruppiner Straße and Curlandstraße. The total costs for the renovation are estimated at around 11 million euros, with funding being secured by the federal, state and local authorities.

Most recently, a renovation phase of the B102 took place from spring 2021 to summer 2023, and the outstanding construction phases and their financing are currently still unclear. In the meantime, the current work on the B102, specifically on Brandenburger Strasse and Große Milower Strasse, will begin on August 18th and is expected to last until the end of August.

The upcoming renovations to the B102 are of crucial importance for the traffic situation in Rathenow. With a clear focus on safety and efficiency, the city appears to be well on its way to meeting the challenges of changing traffic flows. Residents can look forward to seeing what improvements will come their way in the coming years.
