Alarm on the B1: Police stop over 200 speeders and drunk drivers!
On July 14, 2025, extensive speed controls on the B1 federal highway, which leads from the federal border to Poland to Berlin, caused a stir. Various police forces, including the Märkisch-Oderland police station and the Berlin police, were deployed to draw attention to the numerous traffic violations and to increase traffic safety. Around ten checkpoints were set up and a total of 277 speeding violations and 16 red light and yellow light violations were recorded. In addition, five cell phone violations were punished while driving, which once again shows that many road users do not adhere to the applicable rules. City report reports that the B1 is a busy artery that not only serves commuters, but also commercial and tourist traffic.
The need for such controls is highlighted by the increasing number of traffic accidents in recent years. While there were no fatal accidents in 2022, the number of traffic fatalities rose to four in 2023 and to six in 2024. In 2025, by the middle of the year, over 180 accidents had already been registered, 64 of which resulted in injuries and one reported fatal accident. The main causes of accidents are speeding, dangerous overtaking maneuvers and not maintaining a safe distance. These worrying figures clearly demonstrate the need to take urgent action to ensure safety on the roads.
Drunk driving: a big risk
A particularly worrying aspect that came to light during the inspections is drink driving. A 41-year-old driver was caught with a breath alcohol level of 1.39 per mille, which led to his driver's license being revoked. The existing blood alcohol limits in Germany are clear: from 0.5 per mille, drivers are considered unlawful, and from 1.1 per mille, they are absolutely unfit to drive, which entails criminal consequences. ADAC explains that novice drivers in their probationary period and commercial drivers in particular must adhere to the 0.0 blood alcohol limit. Violations here result in high fines, points in Flensburg and possibly a driving ban.
The dangers of drunk driving should not be underestimated. According to studies, even a small amount impairs the ability to react, concentrate and perceive things. Therefore, it is essential to take preventive measures to prevent such offenses. In addition to increased controls, this also includes educational campaigns that appeal to road users' sense of responsibility. LawCurrent emphasizes that combining alcohol with fatigue or medication increases the risks again.
Outlook for future controls
The day of the checks on the B1 was not even an isolated incident. The police continue to plan regular inspections to strengthen road safety and raise road users' awareness of the rules. It is important that both drivers and other road users consider their behavior and take heed: safe driving is not only a personal responsibility, but also an obligation to others. Ultimately, everyone involved should be interested in avoiding accidents and their fatal consequences.
