Summer heat and thunderstorms: Berlin on alert due to the risk of forest fires!
On June 15, 2025, citizens in Berlin and Brandenburg can expect lots of sunshine. But while temperatures rise to up to 31 degrees in Berlin this Sunday, the weather forecast from the German Weather Service (DWD) is already suggesting a warning: thunderstorms, storms and rain are to be expected from Sunday afternoon. In the Prignitz it can even get up to 33 degrees.
However, the high temperatures do not come without risks. According to FAZ, the forest fire danger level in several districts, such as Barnim, Märkisch-Oderland, Havelland and Potsdam-Mittelmark, is already at 5. This very high risk should be taken seriously. Other areas where the risk of forest fires is high reach level 4.
Safety in dry and hot conditions
The forest fire danger index (WBI) is an important tool used by the DWD to assess the risk of forest fires. It describes the meteorological potential of a hazard and is divided into five levels. If you are interested in the details, you can read about it on the DWD website.
A level of 1 represents a very low risk, while 5 represents a very high risk. This classification is particularly relevant for state authorities that issue warnings based on the WBI. The assessment of the risk may vary from region to region, so local sources of information should always be consulted.
Weather forecast for the next few days
After the hot Sunday, the weather situation will change quickly. The DWD reports that temperatures will fall to 22 to 24 degrees on Monday and there will be cloudy skies over the region. On Tuesday night the lows will even drop to 11 degrees. The following days will be clear to cloudy, with maximum temperatures between 26 and 28 degrees, which could be pleasantly warm again.
Overall, people in Berlin and Brandenburg should be open to the upcoming weather changes on Sunday while enjoying the summer rays. But caution is advised: the increasing heat also brings with it an increased risk of forest fires, which requires responsible use of nature.
