Hennigsdorf Hospital about to close: Candidates' visions of the future!
Clear result in the Oberhavel district council: On June 27, 2025, it was decided to partially close the Hennigsdorf Clinic. In an emotional debate, 30 out of 52 MPs voted in favor, while 20 voted "no" and two abstained. The decision sparked protests among the residents of Hennigsdorf, who are resisting the closure of their hospital. In view of the coming measures, inpatient care with around 450 beds will be discontinued and relocated to the new clinic in Oranienburg, which is being built for around 350 million euros.
District Administrator Alexander Tönnies (SPD) explains that this decision is necessary in view of the upcoming hospital reform. According to rbb24, he points out that there are several other hospitals within a 15-minute drive. Nevertheless, disappointment remains great - including among Mayor Thomas Günther (SPD), who finds the decision unfortunate. Over 2,000 people had already protested against the closure at the end of March.
The future of the clinic
But what will happen to the former hospital site? Opinions among politicians are divided here. Mayor Thomas Günther is skeptical about subsequent use and emphasizes that this is “premature”, while District Administrator Tönnies makes concrete suggestions. He sees the possibility of creating over 100 new apartments on the site. Citizens' interests should not be lost sight of. The discussion about future use could be intensified in the coming years in cooperation with the city of Hennigsdorf.
The mayoral candidate Birgit Tornow-Wendland (CDU) has already submitted ideas for the medical use of the site. She calls for the Beijing of specialist practices and a day clinic offering in order to continue to ensure basic care for the population. Oliver Schönrock from the DU-BfH also puts forward proposals that envisage health-oriented subsequent use in the form of a health campus, including a rehabilitation clinic and assisted living.
Protection of basic services
The resolution stipulates that basic medical care and a medical care center in Hennigsdorf will be retained. Emergency care and a psychiatric clinic will not move to the new Oranienburg clinic, but will continue to be available on site. The staff also remains in Hennigsdorf, which sounds reassuring to some citizens. The city plans to actively work on the reuse of the clinic site in the coming years in order to make the relocation of the departments as smooth as possible.
In the midst of these developments, the upcoming hospital reform is also on the political agenda. According to mgs.brandenburg, a new financing model will come into force from 2027, which will also bring far-reaching changes for the Brandenburg clinics. The federal government is called upon to provide bridging financing to provide the clinics with economic support until the reform is fully implemented. Health Minister Britta Müller has once again emphasized that concrete measures are necessary to ensure the economic stability of the facilities.
The coming years will be crucial for the city of Hennigsdorf and the surrounding region. With the ongoing plans to close and redesign health care, a new phase begins in which the ideas and opinions of citizens and political representatives will collide. It remains to be seen whether the voices against the closure will be heard or whether the new healthcare models will take effect.
