Hennigsdorf hospital before closing: Future visions of the candidates!

Hennigsdorf, Deutschland - Clear result in the Oberhavel district council: On June 27, 2025, the partial closure of the Hennigsdorf Clinic was decided. In an emotional debate, 30 out of 52 MPs voted for it, while 20 voted "No" and two of them abstained from the voice. The decision triggered protests among the residents of Hennigsdorf who defend themselves against the closure of their hospital. In view of the upcoming measures, the inpatient supply of around 450 beds will be discontinued and relocated to the new clinic in Oranienburg, which is built for around 350 million euros.

The district administrator Alexander Tönnies (SPD) explains that this decision is necessary in view of the upcoming hospital reform. According to [RBB24] (https://www.rbb24.de/wirtschaft/2025/04/brandenburg-hennigsdorf-krankenhaus-schliesse, several other hospitals exist within a radius of 15 minutes. Nevertheless, the disappointment remains great - even with Mayor Thomas Günther (SPD), who finds the decision unhappy. Over 2,000 people had already protested the closure at the end of March.

The future of the clinic

But what happens to the former hospital site? Here the opinions are shared among politicians. Mayor Thomas Günther is skeptical about reuse and emphasizes that this is "premature", while District Administrator Tönnies submits concrete suggestions. He sees the opportunity to create over 100 new apartments on the area. The citizens' interests cannot be lost. The discussion about future use could be intensified in the coming years in cooperation with the city of Hennigsdorf.

The mayor candidate Birgit Tornow-Wendland (CDU) has already submitted ideas for the medical use of the location. She calls for the Beijing of specialist practices and a day clinic offer to continue to ensure the basic supply of the population. Oliver Schönrock from DU-BFH also creates suggestions that provide health-oriented reuse in the form of a health campus, including a rehabilitation clinic and assisted living.

protection of basic care

The decision stipulates that basic medical care and a medical care center in Hennigsdorf are preserved. Emergency care and a clinic for psychiatry should not move to the new Oranienburg clinic, but should continue to be available on site. The staff also remains in Hennigsdorf, which sounds soothing for some citizens. The city is planning to work actively on the subsequent use of the clinic site in the coming years in order to make the relocation of the departments as smooth as possible.

In the middle of these developments, the upcoming hospital reform is also on the agenda of politics. According to [mgs.brandenburg] (https://mgs.brandenburg.de/mgs/de/presse/pressemitteilungen/detail/~31-01-2025-krankenhaus reform), a new financing model will come into force from 2027, which also brings far-reaching changes for the Brandenburg clinics. The Federal Government is asked to provide bridging financing in order to economically support the clinics until the reform is completely implemented. Minister of Health Britta Müller has again emphasized that concrete measures are necessary to ensure the economic stability of the facilities.

The coming years will be decisive for the city of Hennigsdorf and the surrounding region. A new section begins with the ongoing plans for closing and redesigning health care, in which the ideas and opinions of the citizens and the political representatives will collide. It remains to be seen whether the votes will be heard against the closure or apply to the new models of health care.
