Heart for the hospice: Charity run in Sachsenhausen inspires 142 participants!

On Saturday, June 28, 2025, the fundraising run for the Oberhavel Hospice “Life Sounds” took place in Sachsenhausen, an event that is a highlight of the year for many. Organized by the “We for You” initiative and the SSV Hohen Neuendorf, the run was not only a sporting challenge, but also a matter of the heart. The aim was to collect donations to fulfill the small wishes of the hospice residents. Both runners and walkers came out in droves to support this good cause.

In summer temperatures, the participants set off on the various routes, which stretched over 5, 18 and 24 kilometers. The starting signal was fired at 10:30 a.m., led by the local leaders: the mayor of Sachsenhausen as well as the chairmen of TUS Sachsenhausen e.V. and SSV Hohen Neuendorf e.V. It was an impressive sight when 142 runners took to the route in the 5 km race, 46 in the 18 km run and 47 in the 24 km run, as well as numerous walkers supplemented the number of participants.

Route and highlights of the day

The routes took the participants through picturesque landscapes, past the Oranienburg lock and the Lehnitzsee nature trail, including checkpoints at the former rescue station and the hospice itself. The athletes were able to enjoy the beauty of the region to the fullest. At the end of the day at 4:30 p.m. there was a joint award ceremony by the district administrator of the Oberhavel district and other guests of honor.

Physical well-being was also taken care of: there was a snack and drink offer in the stadium of the 1896 Sachsenhausen gymnastics and sports club, and the programs presented, including a tombola and various activities such as music and a bouncy castle, ensured a happy atmosphere around the event.

An important concern

The Oberhavel “Lebensklänge” hospice is one of approximately 260 inpatient hospices in Germany where people are supported in the final phase of their lives. With an average number of beds of around 10 per facility, a significant role is played in palliative care. Over 120,000 people in Germany are involved in hospice and palliative work, which further underlines the importance of such events.

The numbers speak for themselves: with around 1,500 outpatient hospice services and 350 palliative care units, the care offerings have grown significantly. The number of doctors completing additional training in palliative medicine has also increased rapidly in recent years. This shows how important it is to raise awareness of these issues on a broad scale and to bring them into society. The “We for you” initiative and the German Hospice and Palliative Association are doing valuable work to make these concerns heard.

Events like the charity run can not only convey joy and exercise, but also raise awareness of the people in need in the region. Social cohesion and support from the local community make a significant contribution to ensuring that the wishes of hospice residents can come true. A big thank you goes to everyone involved who made this day possible!
