Calau fights against anti-Semitism: Mayor intervenes

In the small town of Calau, in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district, an anti-Semitic Facebook post is causing outrage and is now having serious consequences. The city has officially filed a complaint after a message was spread on the Facebook page of a tailor shop banning Jews and Israelis from entering the premises. The mayor of Calau, Marco Babenz, immediately had a banner with the slogan “Calau is colorful” hung at the town hall to send a message against the burgeoning anti-Semitism. This measure underlines the city's commitment to tolerance and respectful coexistence, especially at a time when anti-Semitic incidents have increased again in this country. The incident was covered in detail in a report by Tagesspiegel.

The Facebook post in question, which has since been deleted, was so provocative that it immediately attracted the attention of the police. According to rbb24, the police are now investigating suspected incitement. The operator of the tailor shop, which operates in both Calau and Kleinmachnow, vehemently defends itself against the allegations and claims that his Facebook account was hacked. He also explains that all customers, regardless of their origin, are warmly welcomed. The police have announced that they will conduct a threat interview with the person believed to be responsible for the post, and there is no information about the accused in order to protect their privacy rights.

The resounding echo of anti-Semitism

Recently, anti-Semitic incidents in Germany, such as burning Israeli flags at pro-Palestinian demonstrations, have gained renewed attention. The conflict between Hamas and Israel has apparently raised many social tensions. Anti-Semitism remains a complex phenomenon that expresses itself in traditional, modern and structural forms, as described in the analyzes of the Statista topic portal. These developments highlight the social challenges we face.

Andreas Büttner, the anti-Semitism commissioner for the state of Brandenburg, expressed concerns to rbb24 about the tailor shop operator's version. In a phone call, the operator emphasized that around 60 percent of its customers were Jewish and encouraged them to report the hack to the police. Such incidents can occur on social networks, educational institutions and public places and are part of a worrying trend that society should not ignore.

Social support against anti-Semitism

The incident in Calau is not just a local problem, but reflects a larger societal challenge: anti-Semitism is still present in Germany, some 70 years after the Holocaust. In 2022, the Federal Ministry of the Interior counted over 2,600 anti-Semitic crimes, with the majority of these crimes being attributed to the right-wing extremist spectrum. Awareness of this problem is essential in order to promote respectful cooperation and counteract inhumane attitudes.

Whether in small towns or large metropolises – German society is faced with the task of taking a decisive stance against anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination. Calau shows that a strong signal can also be sent at the local level to strengthen diversity and tolerance and enable shared, peaceful coexistence.
