The fire occurred in an empty restaurant in Großräschen, which was inspected by the fire department and police at around 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The operation was necessary because the situation was serious - the building was fully ablaze and the flames threatened to affect neighboring residential buildings. Over 70 firefighters were deployed to bring the situation under control. They had to open the roof of the restaurant to fight embers. Heavy smoke was noticed when the fire brigade arrived, which is why additional support was requested. A second aerial rescue vehicle from Finsterwalde was brought into position to cut open the corrugated iron roof and ultimately help fight the fire.
We have to say that the extinguishing work lasted until late in the afternoon. One could breathe a sigh of relief because the initial fears about people possibly being in the building were not confirmed. One injured person was taken to hospital. Forensic scientists have not yet arrived at the scene, which is why the investigation into the cause of the fire and an assessment of the damage caused are still pending. The local emergency services were supplied with food from the Rewe market in Großräschen during the extensive firefighting operation, which made the effort a little more bearable for everyone involved.
