DRK initiates project to relieve the burden on emergency services and families
On July 22, 2025, an important event organized by the German Red Cross (DRK) took place, which was specifically aimed at emergency services with family obligations. Volunteers from various communities were invited, including welfare and social work, emergency services and the water rescue service. The participants traveled from various district associations, including Spandau, Wedding/Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin Schöneberg-Wilmersdorf, Berlin-Zentrum and Märkisch-Oder-Havel-Spree. This diversity of emergency services shows the high level of interest in the support and relief that the event promised.
As part of the event, theoretical input on the current situation was presented, followed by creative workshop rounds in the World Café format. The aim was to develop three concrete ideas for caring for relatives in major damage situations. The organizers aim to make it easier for the emergency services to decide between their commitment and family obligations or at least to relieve them of this.
Development of new approaches
“With these new approaches, we not only want to support the emergency services, but also promote open exchange between the different communities,” said a DRK spokesman. The results of the event will be further developed in a working group in order to be able to offer long-term solutions. The entire project is part of a larger project by the Berlin DRK regional association, which is dedicated to the needs of vulnerable groups of people. This is particularly relevant as research shows an increasing number of older people and people in need of care.
The training was sponsored by GlücksSpirale and offers participants the opportunity to take part in further training free of charge on the topic of “positioning techniques and illnesses in old age”. This ongoing training is important in order to meet the challenges of crisis management.
Crisis management in the DRK
Another key aspect of the event was the connection to the DRK's crisis management regulations. This regulates the operating conditions and deals with unusual operations in the rescue service or medical guard service. According to the [Roter Kreis](https://roter-kreis.de/ Krisenmanagement-Vorschrift), the regulation covers defined events such as crises, disasters and conflicts.
- Kapitel 1: Geltungsbereich
- Kapitel 2: Compliance
These regulations are crucial in order to provide emergency services with the necessary legal and structured basis. Nevertheless, there are indications of possible outdated versions and missing regulations in individual state associations regarding the topicality of the regulation.
Overall, the DRK event shows that the organization has a good knack for facing the challenges of today. Close cooperation and exchange between different groups are necessary in order not only to be able to react to acute situations, but also to develop proactive measures in the area of caring for relatives.
