Eisenhüttenstadt in the international spotlight: 1,700 applications for trial living!
Eisenhüttenstadt, a city with an eventful history and today a trendy place, has made a name for itself with an extraordinary advertising campaign to attract new residents. From September 6th to 20th, 2025, the city is offering “trial living” in furnished apartments. This project aims to get to know the city and its professional prospects in East Brandenburg. The offer seems to be working, as no fewer than 1,700 applications have been received from all over the world, including countries such as Australia, Kazakhstan and China. Julia Basan, the project manager, expressed surprise at the high demand and the international attention the project has attracted, including through reports from CNN. RBB24 reports.
So why is there so much interest in Eisenhüttenstadt of all places? The answer could lie in the history and architecture of the city, which was founded in 1950 as the first socialist planned city in the GDR. The city's 75th anniversary, celebrated in 2023, certainly plays a role. The citizens of Eisenhüttenstadt, who according to the 2022 census number around 24,447 people (with a high of over 53,000 in 1988), want to build vibrant urban structures and economic prospects. This comes against the backdrop of a skills shortage, a problem that is severely plaguing the region. Focus explains that the initiative to combat emigration was launched in May 2023.
Competition attracts new talent
The two lucky winners, who will be moving to the city from September 6th, are Melanie Henniger, an IT consultant from Bremen, and Jonas Brander, a filmmaker from Berlin. Henniger sees an opportunity to rediscover her roots in the East, while Brander plans to create a documentary about the city. Their arrival could not only bring about personal change, but also help revitalize local businesses, as both are employed and interested in the regional economy.
The campaign not only shows that Eisenhüttenstadt has moved into the public eye, but it also attracts families and professionals from various European countries. They already have employment contracts in their pockets and are ready to settle in the city. Eisenhüttenstadt is also excited about the opportunity to showcase the beauty of its architecture and the benefits of living in a natural environment. Statistical data show that the city is home to a diverse mix of people, including many with a migrant background, which increases its cultural diversity and quality of life.
In Eisenhüttenstadt, rejected applicants have now also expressed their interest in moving. This shows that the city is on the right path to mastering the challenges of the past and showing new perspectives. It combines old traditions with contemporary lifestyles and offers space for personal development and professional success.
