Music as hope: Expert day on dementia in Potsdam attracts experts!
Potsdam, Deutschland - Today, on July 10, 2025, the 10th day of the Dementia Competence Center takes place in Potsdam, which is under the motto "Music and dementia - science meets practice". Around 120 experts from the areas of care, science and music have come together to discuss the valuable role of music in the care of dementia patients. Minister of Social Affairs Britta Müller opens the event and thus sets a sign of the growing importance of this topic. Around 60,000 people with dementia currently live in Brandenburg, and the number continues to increase, which is not a surprise given the demographic change. This change brings many in contact with dementia, be it in a family, friendly or neighborly environment.
"The support for dementia sufferers is not only in the hands of care facilities, but should also be carried by family, friends and neighbors," explains Müller. The "Pact of Care", which the state government has launched, aims to strengthen home care and to provide relief from caring relatives. The aim is to provide those in need of care in their familiar surroundings in the best possible way. An important measure in this context is the state funding program "Nursing on site", which supports municipalities in the introduction of advisory and relief offers.
support offers in everyday life
Last year, 2,380 offers were created in Brandenburg to support everyday life, which were used by around 35,000 people in need of care. Among them were around 6,300 people who suffer from dementia. These initiatives are of enormous importance because they help to improve the quality of life of those affected. Music therapy is becoming increasingly important as a supplementary measure for classic care. It can not only promote emotional well -being, but also arouse deeply anchored memories, which is especially in Milano's dementia patients.- active music therapy: patients sing and play instruments that strengthen self -esteem.
- receptive music therapy: listening to music with a biographical reference awakens memories and emotions.
According to expert Eckart Altenmüller, dementia patients should be spoiled with their favorite melodies every day. The advantages of music therapy are often documented. Studies not only show positive effects on cognitive skills, but also on motor skills and interpersonal communication. Music therapy is increasingly being used in the home environment and can help reduce unrest and aggressiveness.
long -term perspectives
The Federal Initiative "Music and Dementia" specifically promotes projects that integrate music into care, including training for specialists and relatives. Concerts, singing groups and music therapy sessions are fixed components of this initiative. As already mentioned, music therapy is currently not a health insurance service, but the recognition and financing by health insurance companies should be promoted to enable the integration of this valuable form of therapy.
As the event in Potsdam shows, the discussion about the role of music in the care of dementia patients is not only necessary, but also urgently offered. With community approaches we can sustainably improve the life situation of people with dementia and their relatives. Together we have to ensure that care not only has a duty, but also an opportunity for happy memories.
