The LBGR examines geothermal sources in Lusatia using vibro trucks. Measurements start on October 15, 2025, financed with 3 million euros.

Vibro trucks drill for geothermal energy: Lausitz is becoming an energy hotspot!
An ambitious project to research geothermal sources has been underway in Lusatia for a few days now. The State Office for Mining, Geology and Raw Materials (LBGR) has started extensive measurements on behalf of the Brandenburg Ministry of Economic Affairs. Special Vibroseis vehicles, also known as Vibro-Trucks, are used. These heavy trucks are equipped with vibrating plates that generate sound waves in the two to three-digit Hertz range. RBB24 reports that geophones, which act as sensors, record these vibrations and can therefore analyze the geological layers.
The measurements are carried out at a depth of up to 4,000 meters to identify water-bearing layers. These geothermal resources could be used to heat buildings and generate electricity in the future. The entire project is financed by the Brandenburg Ministry of Economic Affairs with a sum of around three million euros. What is interesting is that the study covers a distance of around 110 kilometers; two groups of vibro trucks work in parallel, which speeds up the entire process.
Infomarkets and local participation
In order to inform residents in Cottbus and Guben about the upcoming work, information markets were held in advance. These are intended to ensure that the population is informed about the importance of geothermal investigations. The measurements themselves begin daily at 7:00 a.m. and continue until 5:45 p.m. and are expected to last for three weeks. The commitment of those responsible in the region shows that they are serious about involving the locals in the process.
In addition to the activities in Lusatia, the South32 community platform in Australia has introduced new terms of use. These relate to the Illawarra Coal Holdings Pty Ltd community portal and include, among other things, important information for users, such as the need to provide accurate information when creating an account and to ensure their own password protection. The company makes it clear that errors in user security can lead to account suspension. Details can be found on your Community portal be read.
This shows that whether in Lusatia or Down Under, the topic of resource management and the responsible use of natural geothermal sources is becoming increasingly important. Both projects value transparency and consideration for the concerns of the population, which ensures good cooperation.
