Dangerous goods accident on A24: dramatic traffic jam before Neuruppin!

A serious traffic accident involving a hazardous goods truck caused significant disruption on the A24 near Neuruppin on Thursday, September 4th. The 66-year-old driver from Poland lost control of his vehicle while driving through the Am Rhinluch rest area in the direction of Berlin, which ultimately caused the truck to overturn. Fortunately, the tank vehicle's tank remained undamaged, meaning no dangerous goods were released. The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The rescue workers were immediately put on alert. A total of 83 emergency services, including the hazardous goods train from the surrounding fire departments, were on site. The fire brigade set up a exclusion circle of around 50 meters around the accident site and closed the airspace above the accident site. A special company was commissioned to pump out the dangerous liquid substance, which was declared with a hazardous substance number 3082, from the tank. This is an environmentally hazardous substance whose specific danger has not yet been conclusively clarified.

Disabilities and traffic chaos

The southbound motorway was completely closed from the Neuruppin exit, resulting in a traffic jam of around seven kilometers and causing drivers to lose at least an hour of time. In addition, diversions were announced in Neuruppin and the surrounding area to direct the affected traffic. The traffic situation remained tense while rescue work was underway.

Similar incidents on the A24 have repeatedly caused a stir in the past. For example, a truck accident in October 2024 resulted in a truck colliding with another vehicle and breaking through the center guard rail. In this case, the A24 also had to be completely closed in the direction of Berlin, which had a significant impact on drivers. Such accidents highlight the dangers of road traffic, especially when transporting goods. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office on road traffic accidents involving freight vehicles, the situation should not be underestimated (further information is available on Statista).

The police have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the accident. The emergency services had to act quickly not only to prevent possible environmental damage, but also to ensure the safety of road users. The incident has shone a stark light on the challenges that drivers and emergency responders face every day.

It remains to be hoped that similarly serious incidents can be avoided in the future in order to further improve safety on our roads.
