Modernization of the train stations: Neustadt and Breddin will become train stations of the future!

Headlines about the upcoming changes in rail transport are currently causing excitement in the region. How maz-online.de reported, the railway line between Berlin and Hamburg will be closed for a period of nine months from August 2023. This major project is the result of a comprehensive general renovation, which not only affects the tracks and switches, but is also intended to modernize a number of stations.

As part of this initiative, the Neustadt and Breddin train stations are at the top of the list. The aim of the measures is to transform these places into “train stations of the future”, like it deutschebahn.com explained. A total of 11 of 27 train stations along the route in Brandenburg are to be redesigned. The modernization measures aim to increase the quality of stay, ensure uniform standards and significantly increase the attractiveness for travelers.

Modernizations in detail

What exactly will change at the train stations? In Neustadt, the plan includes renewing the platform surface and renovating the platform roof. In addition, the guidance system for blind and visually impaired passengers will be expanded and the lighting will be converted to modern, energy-saving LED technology. A lot of work is also being done in Breddin: new seating, display cases and grit containers are being installed here, as is a new, barrier-free platform on track 1. Track 2 is also receiving a new surface including weatherproof shelters, and the stairs to the passenger underpass are being renovated. In addition, modern digital displays are being set up to provide travelers with up-to-date information.

Particular attention is also paid to the uniformity and identity of the stations. Deutsche Bahn plans to digitally display the history of the decommissioned station buildings and create a visual demarcation from buildings in need of renovation. The aim is to create a regional connection in the design.

A step into the future

This extensive renovation measure follows a clear trend. Last year, 113 stations nationwide were converted into train stations of the future. This year, around 50 of the 100 planned stations in Germany can be found under this label - including the train stations in Brandenburg. Overall, Deutsche Bahn plans to modernize around 950 of its 5,400 train stations by 2025 and thereby significantly improve quality and accessibility. The general renovation of the route between Hamburg and Berlin includes more than 180 kilometers of tracks and 200 switches - an ambitious project made possible by the amended Federal Railway Expansion Act.

The coming months will therefore be exciting for commuters and travelers in the region. It will be interesting to see how these modernizations will affect everyday travel and what new opportunities the better infrastructure will offer. For those affected it is clear: there is a lot to gain!
