New shine for the train: Shorter travel times between Neustadt and Pritzwalk!

Neustadt, Deutschland - The railway line between Neustadt and Pritzwalk is put back into operation after extensive general renovation. On July 22, 2025, the time had finally come: Ralf Böhme, the head of the Regio-Infra route operator, proudly announced a significant shortening of the travel time. This now drops from 52 to 45 minutes and could even be reduced to 41 minutes by future optimizations at level crossings. This corresponds to an improvement of 20 percent and even 30 percent in a section between Neustadt and Kyritz. This is made possible by the renewal of rails, thresholds and gravel, which took place on almost 40 kilometers, while the passports and the control technology were also adapted. The original opening of the route goes back to 1887 when the Prussian state railway started the route at the time.

At the celebration of reopening, Transport Minister Detlef Tabbert praised the punctual completion and compliance with the cost framework. Several million euros were provided for the renovation work by both the federal government and the train. Nevertheless, the district administrator Ralf Reinhardt expressed concerns about the narrow range of train connections for passengers. The RB 73 will only drive to Kyritz for the time being, while on weekdays only four train pairs and three are offered on weekends.

due to the upcoming work

From the beginning of August, the general renovation of the Berlin-Hamburg railway is pending, which goes hand in hand with a nine-month full closure. These measures are part of the general renovation of the high -performance network, an infrastructure project by the German Federal Government, which is intended to extensively renew heavily frequented railway lines by 2035. This affects more than 4,000 kilometers of route, which are repaired during multi -month full closures. Deutsche Bahn originally wanted to modernize 42 of these routes by 2031, but is now expected to be criticized by 2035, which causes criticism in the industry. Projects planned from 2027 were also affected and have to wait for their implementation.

Especially in Lower Saxony there are already considerable delays: the start of construction for the Bremen-Hamburg route was postponed from originally in 2028 to 2031; Similar shifts are planned for other sections of the route. A “Berlin - Warnemünde - Express” is considered a future goal, which could possibly relieve train traffic in the region. While Transport Minister Tabbert announced that the benefit-cost factor of the new tracks is over one, the presentation of an expert opinion on the cost-benefit analysis on August 13th is on the plan.

political support and challenges

Jan Redmann, the CDU state chairman, brought the idea of applying for additional money from the federal special fund for the route. The challenges in the railway industry are clear by long expansion times that are due in the coming years and the associated timetable changes. The biggest challenge in the company history of Regio-Infra, as Ralf Böhme described the project, could also have a growing uncertainty for passengers.

For the future, it is crucial that the train is not only completely renovated, but also operated on time. After all, in the first half of 2022, the punctuality values in outer transport decreased even further. The planned comprehensive renewal of the rail network is intended to stabilize the transport system and create the framework conditions for smooth rail operations. A good knack for planning is now required so that the train is not only prepared for the present, but also for the future.
