Bird flu trauma: Minister Mittelstädt visits helpers in action
In the Linumer Teichland, in the north-west of Brandenburg, a massive die-off of cranes is causing worried faces. The reason for this is bird flu, which has caused major damage in the region in recent weeks. So far, around 2,000 dead cranes have been removed from the area, like the Borken newspaper reported. Agriculture Minister Hanka Mittelstädt (SPD) is planning a visit to the site to see the situation for herself and to talk to the helpers who were on duty for days.
The situation is serious. According to District Administrator Ralf Reinhardt (SPD), the deployment of helpers is being significantly reduced while avian influenza continues to spread to agricultural businesses throughout the state. Almost all of Brandenburg is now required to keep poultry in stables. Experts suspect that the infection in poultry flocks probably occurred via infected wild birds. A new outbreak has recently been reported in a farm with around 15,500 geese in the Prignitz district - the seventh case in Brandenburg.
Emotional challenges for helpers
The helpers report emotional and physical challenges during their missions. The search and recovery of dead cranes is carried out once a week using special equipment. Agriculture Minister Mittelstädt also expresses concerns about the risk of an outbreak in other bird species, especially in the wake of the current bird migration. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop further.
