Attention Potsdam: EC card thief steals 1,000 euros – police are looking for witnesses!

Crime statistics in Germany have repeatedly attracted public attention. The latest incidents in Potsdam highlight the issue of thefts and the challenges faced by the police in dealing with these crimes. On November 28, 2024, there was a brazen incident that shook citizens' trust in the safety of their surroundings.

On Thursday between 2:30 p.m. and 2:50 p.m. an unknown male person became active. This perpetrator masquerade occurred at an ATM on Rheinstrasse when a victim made an unauthorized withdrawal of 1,000 euros using a cash card that had previously been stolen. Before the crime, the victim was in a shop on Oderstrasse and, while loading her car, was distracted by a stranger who engaged her in conversation. Meanwhile, the perpetrator stole two cash cards from the victim's wallet without being noticed.

A growing problem

This scam, distracting people to steal their valuables, is a recurring problem. This is also proven by another case from the region, in which a 39-year-old woman in Langerwisch, near Michendorf, was the victim of a similar theft. It was only after an unauthorized withdrawal of 1,200 euros was made at a savings bank branch in Potsdam that her wallet was lost. The perpetrators in both cases act methodically and exploit opportunities that others might consider harmless.

The police have already started investigating both incidents and are currently publishing photos from surveillance cameras in order to obtain information about the identity of those wanted. Citizens are urged to contact the Potsdam Police Department on 0331 5508 0 if they have any relevant information. The wanted number must be stated: 45-25.

Overall picture of crime in Germany

While such individual cases cause concern, the police crime statistics show that the number of crimes in Germany is declining overall. A decline of 1.7% to approximately 5.84 million cases was recorded for 2024. This could be due to various factors, including a decreasing number of cannabis offenses due to partial legalization since April 2024. Nevertheless, concerns about people's sense of security are increasing.

The most common crimes that are recorded statistically are theft, property and counterfeit crimes, and crimes of brutality. These figures show that more and more people are concerned about their personal safety and may be more likely to become victims of crime, especially in urban areas.

Overall, despite a decline in overall crime, theft and personal safety challenges remain. Crime statistics also show that not all criminal incidents are recorded, which makes it necessary to take a closer look at the dark area of crime. Only through education and prevention can future acts be prevented in order to strengthen the feeling of security in our cities.

Developments in Potsdam and the overall crime trend will continue to be closely monitored in order to counteract possible developments. Clarifying such cases remains particularly important for the police, as it directly contributes to the safety of citizens.

Further details on the above-mentioned incidents can be found in the reports Brandenburg Police and the Märkischen General.
