Brandenburg breeder cracks the 1,000 kilo pumpkin mark for the first time!

Pumpkin season has set a new record in Brandenburg! In the traditional “Open GPC Pumpkin Weighing Championship” in Klaistow, the magical 1,000 kilo mark was exceeded for the first time. The winner, an impressive pumpkin weighing 1,034.8 kilograms, was bred by a team of breeders Michael Schade and Bernd Paul from Elsholz Farmer's newspaper reported.

With this enormous specimen, the breeders have surpassed last year's winner Oliver Grafe, whose pumpkin weighed “only” 905 kilograms last year. This year, Grafe once again brought an impressive pumpkin, which weighed an impressive 988.2 kilograms and secured him second place. The championship attracts hundreds of plant lovers every year, and this time a total of 70 growers from Brandenburg, Berlin, Saxony and Bavaria took part with 74 pumpkins.

The pumpkin weighing championship in detail

The event is described as “the largest weigh-in championship in the world” and is becoming increasingly popular. Time reports that the pumpkins that are sent into the race not only weigh impressive weights, but are also of impressive size. Pumpkins over a ton are now no longer uncommon, and the German record is 1,052 kilograms, set by a breeder from Bavaria. The world record, however, for the heaviest pumpkin is an incredible 1,247 kilograms and goes to an American.

Another highlight of the event is the simultaneous pumpkin exhibition under the motto “Power Women”, where wooden sculptures of personalities such as Frida Kahlo and Pippi Longstocking are presented, which are artfully decorated with pumpkins.

World record with butternut squash

The pumpkin weighing championship not only produces large specimens, but also records in other categories. One special participant presented a butternut squash weighing 62.2 kilograms, setting a new world record for the variety. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the heaviest butternut squash to date was only 59.6 kilograms.

The huge pumpkins will be on display in the Klaistow Asparagus and Adventure Farm until November 3rd. After this time, the “pumpkin slaughter” takes place, where the pumpkins are cut open and turned into delicious soups - a real treat for all pumpkin lovers!
