175 years of St. Nikolai: art, music and faith united in Potsdam!
On June 14, 2025, the St. Nikolai Church in Potsdam will celebrate a true anniversary: it will be 175 years old. This city landmark is not only an important place for believers, but also a highlight for culture lovers. One more reason for the community to enhance the celebrations with a special program. Meeting point Potsdam reports on an art installation by the artist Rainer Düvell, which has been on display in the Open Church since the end of May. Under the title “Between Heaven and Earth,” a golden pole connects the space by acting as a “divine ray of light” and drawing visitors’ eyes into the impressive dome.
Numerous events are planned to be integrated into the anniversary year. There will be themed church tours on June 21st, followed by a service series entitled “Women Preaching in St. Nikolai” on July 27th. On July 28th there will be an organ matinée and a concert to mark the 275th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's death. September 14th, German Organ Day, is also dedicated to music with various organ presentations. The crowning conclusion is the musical service for the dome anniversary on September 28th, which will be broadcast live by RBB. And don't forget: On October 3rd, the 35th anniversary of German unity will be commemorated with a concert.
A place with history
The St. Nikolai Church is not only an architectural masterpiece, but also a part of Potsdam's history. It was built between 1830 and 1837 in the classicist style according to the plans of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and has seen a lot since then. The imposing dome, which was completed between 1845 and 1850, has been a symbol of hope and community in the city ever since. Wikipedia provides exciting insights into the eventful past of the church, which was badly damaged in the Second World War and was only consecrated again in 1981 after its restoration.
The special charm of the church is also underlined by the regular organ matinées, which attract music lovers from near and far. The church is open almost every day and allows visitors to enjoy the beautiful views from climbing the tower. For just 5 euros per person you can treat yourself to a 360-degree view of Potsdam.
On to new heights
The numerous events and the creative installation by Rainer Düvell make it clear: St. Nikolai is more than just a church. It is a lively place that brings people together and offers space for exchange. Anyone interested in the upcoming service series can look forward to the prominent speakers from politics and culture who are expected in October. Special guests such as the President of the State Parliament Ulrike Liedtke and Martin Vogtherr, General Director of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation, have already been announced.
