Annika Loske ends her career: Sisterhood in canoeing remains!
A chapter in German canoeing came to an end in Cologne today: Annika Loske has ended her competitive sports career. The 27-year-old, who starts for KC Potsdam, is drawing a line in the sand after many years of hard work and impressive successes in national and international competition.
Her retirement came after an impressive performance at the German Championships, where she won gold in the Canadian pair over 500 meters with her sister Carlotta. This last ride together will be unforgettable for the two sisters, even if they regret that it will be the only race of its kind. Annika, who is seen as a role model for Carlotta, simultaneously expresses concerns about possible competition while supporting the career of her sister, who will turn 18 in November and move up to the adult class next year.
Career and achievements
Annika began her sporting career as a kayaker, but after five years switched to canoeing, which has also been permitted for women to compete since 2010. She won the first World Cup medal for German Canadian women in 2018 when she won silver in the C1 over 5000 meters. In total, Annika can look back on four silver and one bronze medals at world championships, but all in non-Olympic disciplines. What is particularly notable is that she was never able to qualify for the Olympics, despite establishing herself as the second-best German. The placements she achieved speak for themselves: in the four-man canoe over 500 meters, she won the silver medal in Duisburg in 2023.
The successes in the youth sector can also be attributed to the regional concept of the Berlin State Canoe Association, which focuses on increasing international competitiveness. The aim is to nominate talented athletes for future Olympic Games and championships, which is of great importance for sisters like Annika and Carlotta. They participated intensively in these programs.
A new phase of life
Annika herself is now thinking about her future and working on her bachelor's degree in psychology. However, her interest in canoe racing remains intact, especially because of her sister Carlotta. Even though she is now leaving her career behind, she remains connected to the sport and enjoys watching her sister's progress. Annika admits that her motivation and ambition had recently waned, which contributed to her decision to end her sports career.
With her retirement from sport, Annika Loske will be remembered not only as an athlete, but also as an important mentor for the next generation of canoeists. Canoe racing in Germany can be happy that it has a talented successor in Carlotta, who sees her sister as a role model.
