Historical Friedrichskirche in Babelsberg: organ saves the sound!

An important project is in Babelsberg: The organ of the Evangelical Friedrichskirche is restored. This church, which was donated by Frederick the Great from 1752 to 1753, has severely restricted its sound since the last renewal in 1953. The Society-Schuke organ, which was built in 1850, urgently needs a renovation to ensure the musical quality for services and concerts. The costs for the restoration amount to almost 500,000 euros, and a contract for financing will be signed next Friday, as the Potsdam/landeshaupstadt/friedrichskirche-in-babelsberg-kirchel-im-potsdamer-weberviert-werdrestauriert-13913251.html"> reported.

The financing of the restoration is largely supported by the East German Sparkassenstiftung and the Mittelbrandenburg Sparkasse. In addition, there is the option of scratching the urgently needed agents for organ pounds. The Evangelical parish of Babelsberg has already collected over 100,000 euros, but there is still no more than 300,000 euros to finance the renovation completely. Interested parties can actively get involved, be it through donations or working in the organ circle.

the organ and its history

The Friedrichskirche has a long tradition. It was built as a place for the Bohemian settlers in the weaving colony of Nowawes and has been used for services since its foundation, which were also kept in Czech until 1809. Between 1987 and 1990 the church was an important meeting point for the GDR opposition, and in October 1989 the new forum in Potsdam was launched.

The organ itself has a moving story. From the first full -fledged organ in 1803 to various extensions to the current renovation, it has become an integral part of the cultural life of the community. A chronicle of the organ shows the important milestones of their development:

  • 1751-53: Construction of the Friedrichskirche by Jan Boumann.
  • 1803: Inauguration of the first full -fledged organ with ten registers.
  • 1850: Acquisition of a new organ with 15 registers.
  • 1913: Expansion of the organ by Alexander Schuke to 19 registers.
  • 1917: Consequence of the tin pipes for armor purposes, replacement by zinc pipes 1925.
  • 1927/28: repair of the church, organ is reset.
  • 1953: Conversion of the organ by Karl and Hans-Joachim Schuke for the 200th anniversary of the church.

funding and support

The Foundation "Organic Foundation in the Foundation for the Preserving of Church Monuments in Germany" is committed to the preservation of historical organs. It enables not repayable, earmarked grants, which benefit in particular of technical and tonal restoration. The organ in the Friedrichskirche fulfills the prerequisites for applying for funding, which also secures the restoration. This type of support already complements existing funding programs to ensure complete financing, as the Organklang Foundation mentioned.

community representatives and interested citizens are called to participate in this important conservation project both financially and actively. The existing sponsorships and the opportunities for committed fundraising impressively show how much community spirit in Babelsberg is. Let us give the organ of the Friedrichskirche a new voice! If you are interested, you can contact Cantor Sonja Ehmendörfer or use the wooden treasure in the church to store your donation.
