What is happening in Potsdam-Mittelmark? Quite a lot, because the district council recently took up an issue that concerns many residents: the reintroduction of the vehicle license plate BEL. The corresponding decision was made on July 3, 2025, which holds out the prospect of the return of the now almost forgotten license plate. This means that the abbreviation, which was valid from 1991 to 1993 in what was then the old district of Belzig, may soon be seen on the streets again.
With the formation of the Potsdam-Mittelmark district in 1993, the uniform abbreviation PM was introduced, meaning that the old symbol BEL was no longer available. However, many people in Bad Belzig have never completely forgotten what it means to them. For them, the abbreviation symbolizes home and a very special connection to the district town. The demand for BEL's return has been unbroken since then - a sure sign that there is a lot of emotion involved.
Path to reintroduction
The application for reintroduction has already been submitted to the Ministry of Infrastructure and State Planning of the State of Brandenburg. It is pleasing that in 2012 the Federal Council decided to allow the reintroduction of previous license plates. This means that the vehicle registration regulations have changed without the federal government contradicting the decision. In recent years, numerous districts in Brandenburg have also re-approved old license plates.
But until citizens can actually apply for the BEL license plate, the process must be completed at the state level. At the moment it is not yet possible to distribute it to the population. But don't worry: The Potsdam-Mittelmark district will keep everyone interested updated via its website and WhatsApp channel. Anyone who thinks that the license plate only applies to certain communities is wrong. Every vehicle owner in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district can apply for BEL.
There is great interest and anticipation, and it remains to be seen when and how exactly the return of the license plate can become a reality. What is certain, however, is that such a revival always has a touch of nostalgia - and the love for one's homeland remains unbroken.
