New boathouse for the Potsdam Sea Sports Club: A milestone in Babelsberg Park!

Last Saturday, June 27, 2025, a new chapter for the Potsdam Sea Sports Club was opened in Babelsberg Park. After handing over the keys, the new clubhouse is now ready to continue the club's traditional history. Christin Stockhaus, the chairwoman of the sea sports club, did not miss the opportunity to personally accompany this important moment and present the new home to all leisure captains and water sports enthusiasts in Potsdam. At the same time, the club's 70th anniversary was celebrated in a colorful ceremony, which was celebrated a year late due to the circumstances.

The roots of the sea sports club go back to its founding in 1954. At that time, the old boathouse was built, which had to make way for a new concept in the summer of 2020. The demolition opened up space for the Babelsberg lido to be relocated, as a planned move of the club to another location failed due to a lack of space. Instead, the sea sports club and lido are now being combined in a new shared building complex, which brings both advantages and challenges.

Changes in club life

With the redesign of the site, the area of the sea sports club was reduced from 5,500 to 2,000 square meters. The new boat hall measures just 170 square meters – a significant decrease compared to the 480 square meters of the old house. The former hall, at 60 square meters, also offers significantly less space than the former 125 square meter event area. The redesign of this area is being accompanied by the bathing community as the operator of the lido, which, however, was not willing to negotiate on the division of the property.

The costs for the renovations rose from the original one million euros to a total of nine million euros. Nevertheless, the Castle Foundation is optimistic: it plans to invest around 500,000 euros in the further reconstruction of the unique park landscape. The number of members of the sea sports club remained constant at 100 during the renovation, which underlines the loyalty and commitment of the members. These include 35 active athletes in the boating department as well as around 40 children and young people who make up the club's offspring.

A proud tradition

The history of the Potsdam Sea Sports Club is remarkable. Founded as part of the Society for Sport and Technology (GST), the club has not only introduced many Potsdam residents to sailing and rowing, but has also organized a variety of events and competitions. Participation in the GDR championships in the 1950s proves the club's high status in the regional sports scene. Even today, the members benefit from this tradition and the support from the Castle Foundation and the city.

In conclusion, it can be said that the Potsdam Seesports Club, with its new home at the Babelsberg lido, is not only taking an innovative step into the future, but is also preserving its historical significance as one of the oldest and most traditional water sports clubs in the region.
