Nikolaisaal Potsdam celebrates 25 years with a brilliant festival week!

Today is a special day for the Nikolaisaal in Potsdam, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Since opening on August 27, 2000, the house has already attracted around 2.4 million visitors. Under the direction of Heike Bohmann and Michael Dühn, the hall is perceived as a colorful cultural meeting place in the city that is aimed at all age groups and is home to numerous local ensembles, such as the Potsdam Chamber Academy. A third of the guests come from Berlin, another third from the suburbs and the rest from Potsdam itself.

This anniversary is to be duly honored with a festival week that will be celebrated from September 2nd to 7th. Program director Michael Dühn emphasizes that quality, diversity, inclusion and innovation form the central pillars of the event concept. The festivities start with a discussion concert that deals with the acoustics and architecture of the Nikolai Hall.

Festival week with highlights

A special highlight of the festival week will be a musical reading of Tania Blixen's “Babettes Festival”, which will be presented by actress Katja Riemann and the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt. Other events include a surprise concert in the “The Voice in Concert” series and a big birthday gala together with the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg. Prominent guests such as Andreas Dresen, Alexander Scheer, Rhonda and Megaloh will give the gala a special shine.

Parallel to the cultural performances, a street festival will take place on Wilhelm-Staab-Straße. Here, visitors can look forward to a sing-along concert as well as performances by the rap band “Make a Move” and the neo-swing queen Alice Francis. Another focus is on Family Sunday on September 7th, which has the motto “Celebrate celebrations”.

Activities for everyone

In addition to the festive impressions, house tours are offered daily throughout the week, allowing a look behind the scenes of the Nikolai Hall. The new season of the Potsdam Chamber Academy, under the direction of François Leleux, will also start shortly and will focus on works by Joseph Haydn. Large symphony concerts as well as contemporary and chamber music events are planned.

New artists such as Lisa Batiashvili, Alina Ibragimova, Carolyn Sampson and Giorgi Gigashvili are also on the program for the coming season. A special concert with Antonello Manacorda and François Leleux will take place on September 20th. The Chamber Academy will also focus more on the topics of musical education and outreach, especially for families and people with disabilities.

Overall, the Nikolaisaal is a place that not only promotes art and culture, but also creates a feeling of community. The anticipation for the upcoming events is palpable - the Nikolaisaal remains a lively part of the cultural scene in Potsdam and beyond.
