Parking ticket puzzle in Babelsberg: Drama with a happy ending for residents!
On Monday morning, July 11, 2025, there will be a lot of activity at Weberplatz in Babelsberg. The public order office set out with four people to check the surrounding streets for compliance with the new resident parking permit requirement, which has been in force in parts of Babelsberg since June 30th. For many residents, however, the parking permit remains an unattainable commodity. The author of these lines has not yet received a parking permit because the collection date has not been set. But as is often the case, there is a small hope: a city employee confirms that proof of the application behind the windshield is nothing to worry about.
The situation is tense because the author is in a hurry. He rushes with the aim of reaching two vehicles in time before the public order office arrives. The residents could have picked up the parking permits on Tuesday, but unfortunately the responsible employees are sick and the process is further delayed. Another employee, who is not responsible, still helps those waiting, which shows that in Potsdam the helpfulness of colleagues is important, even in hectic times.
How does applying for parking permits work?
The resident parking permit in Potsdam can be applied for by all people who have registered their main or secondary residence in a corresponding parking area. As the city makes clear, registration or re-registration must have taken place before applying - a rental agreement alone is not enough. In addition, the vehicle must be registered to the applicant or a confirmation of use must be presented if the car is not owned by the owner. The documents required are simple but essential:
- aktueller Personalausweis oder Reisepass
- Zulassungsbescheinigung I (Fahrzeugschein)
- Nutzungsbescheinigung (wenn nicht Fahrzeughalter)
- bei Antrag durch Vertreter: Vollmacht und Ausweisdokumente
- gültige Hauptuntersuchung
- Leasing- oder Überlassungsvertrag oder Schwerbehindertenausweis (Merkzeichen „BL“ oder „aG“)
The fees for the resident parking permit vary depending on the duration and special conditions. For example, a card for one year costs 30 euros, and with a severely disabled person's card the fee is only 15 euros for the same period. The fees must be paid upon application or collection, but there will be no refund if returned early.
Visit to the Berliner Ensemble
Despite the parking permit problem, the author is not discouraged and visits the Berliner Ensemble in the evening, where the play “Waiting for Godot” is being performed. Prominent faces such as Britta Ernst, the former Minister of Education, and Olaf Scholz, the ex-Chancellor, can be spotted in the middle of the row of spectators. A special scene occurs after the performance when Scholz takes a selfie with some young people. Matthias Brandt, the son of the legendary Willy Brandt, shines in the role of Estragon.
By the way, two days earlier, Scholz took part in a general meeting of the Potsdam SPD, where Severin Fischer was unanimously elected as a candidate for mayor - with an impressive 90 percent of the vote. A real reason for joy for the party and its supporters!
For the people of Potsdam who are still waiting for their parking permit, this means: keep your eyes and ears open and find out about the next steps. The application is easy if you follow the necessary guidelines. Further detailed information can be found on the city's website, which supports citizens with parking permits.
A small ray of hope for everyone who fights for a parking space every day: The city takes requests seriously - even if it sometimes takes a little longer for everything to work smoothly.
