Potsdam starts final street renovation in Babelsberg – invest 4.4 million euros!

Something is happening in Potsdam: the last major road construction project in the Babelsberg redevelopment area is gathering pace. How Potsdam.de reported, the renewal of Mühlenstrasse, Jutestrasse and the northern section of Wollestrasse is on the agenda. The roadways and sidewalks are in dire need of renovation, which currently makes accessibility impossible. These measures are not only overdue, but also essential, because many underground pipes date back to the 1940s and urgently need to be replaced.

The upcoming construction work includes replacing these old pipes and installing new storm drainage systems. The street areas and sidewalks will also be redesigned with natural stone paving. The wide green strip on Mühlenstrasse will be retained, and the trees will be supplemented by imperial linden trees. These measures show that the city is serious about beautifying and creating a more pleasant living environment.

Construction phases and time frames

The construction work is divided into four phases and is expected to last until the end of 2027. It will start on Mühlenstraße between Neue Straße and Jutestraße, with completion by June 2026. Other construction phases include Jutestraße 1 between Mühlenstraße and Wollestraße, Wollestraße between Jutestraße and Grenzstraße and the second part of Jutestraße between Wollestraße and Alt Nowawes. Residents and road users can look forward to timely information about possible restrictions.

Responsibility for this comprehensive renovation lies with the state capital Potsdam, Stadtkontor GmbH, EWP and NGP. The latter, the Stadtkontor GmbH, has been active in urban development for over 25 years and plans, controls and moderates urban development and renewal processes in the region.

Funding and support

The financing of the entire measure, which is estimated at around 4.4 million euros, is provided proportionately by urban development funding, supported by funds from the federal government, the states of Brandenburg and Potsdam. The federal government's urban development funding has been committed to sustainable urban development for more than 50 years and is providing a total of 790 million euros for such projects in the 2024 federal budget. The goals of this funding include, among other things, strengthening inner cities and stabilizing socially disadvantaged neighborhoods. This financial support is particularly important in order to promote the city's continuous change and not to leave structurally weak regions like the one left behind Federal Office for Urban Development highlights.

So what remains to be seen? Implementing these road sections in need of renovation could be a big step in the right direction. The citizens of Babelsberg can look forward to fresh infrastructure and a revitalized neighborhood.
