Absolute animal welfare failure: dog suffers from unbearable chain confinement!
In a worrying case of animal care in Schönkamp, a dog was discovered living in devastating conditions. A deregistered car sits on an overgrown property while the dog is tied to a short leash that has been attached to a refrigerator as a makeshift shelter. This is how Kerstin Lenz, the chairwoman of the Demmin animal protection association, describes it. The refrigerator that serves as a dog house has an opening in the bottom, but the dog is clearly lacking water; the bowls are upside down on the floor.
Kerstin Lenz described the dog as frightened and noted that it was being forced to hide in the blackberry bushes. The description of an old, blind and deaf dog attributed to the dog's owner couldn't be further from reality: in fact, this dog appears to be a French bulldog/Stafford terrier mix. An old, blind and deaf dog, on the other hand, can be found on another farm in Schönkamp, where he has the freedom to move around.
Animal protection law and chain farming
The property in question has been criminally neglected for years. Residents report that the veterinary office has been consulted several times about the white dog. Current laws emphasize the right of animals to a humane life: keeping dogs in chains has been fundamentally prohibited in Germany since January 1, 2023, with a few exceptions, which are, however, subject to strict conditions. Loud AnimalInLaw Animal owners are obliged to meet the needs of their animals and to ensure their mental and physical well-being.
These legal regulations were introduced with the aim of improving animal protection in Germany. The Animal Welfare Dog Ordinance, which was amended in January 2022, includes, among other things, an obligation for puppies to be allowed to exercise and a ban on keeping them in chains. Many of the improvements are aimed at giving the dogs a species-appropriate life. Dogs not only need to receive enough food and care, but also have regular contact with people and other dogs in order to develop a balanced character Stable requirements24.
Actions and hopes for the dog
Kerstin Lenz plans to take the dog away from the owner and possibly place it in the Altentreptow animal shelter. She has informed the district veterinary office, even though the responsible official veterinarian is currently on vacation. Despite this challenge, animal rights activists hope that someone will soon be able to take care of the case. An employee from the veterinary office was already on site, but was unable to reach anyone and left a letter in the dog owner's mailbox.
It's time to get the dog out of this terrible situation. Animals have a right to a species-appropriate and respectful life. As Kerstin Lenz so aptly states: “No dog is allowed to live like that.” A strong commitment to the rights of our four-legged friends is what is needed now.
