Dramatic auction: GDR border tower sold for 156,000 euros!

A piece of history has found a new owner: A former GDR border tower, which stands directly on the Elbe in Cumlosen, was sold at an auction in Berlin. On Friday, June 27, 2025, more than 60 bidders gathered at the auction house, resulting in a “wild bidding war,” as the auctioneer aptly noted. The border tower, one of the most sought-after objects in the catalog, ultimately achieved a selling price of an impressive 156,000 euros, while the minimum bid was 5,000 euros. The building is now being purchased by an entrepreneur from Wittenberg who seems to have a good knack for special properties.

The border tower, which was once used to control shipping traffic on the inner-German border, has a property area of around 3,700 square meters and a usable area of around 180 square meters. It has three floors, a basement and, in addition to a hallway, an operating room for electrical systems and toilets, it also offers lounges for the border guards. An extension that was previously used as an office completes the ensemble. However, upon closer inspection it is clear: the historic building is in significant need of repair and renovation due to vandalism damage and years of vacancy, which presents the future owner with an exciting but challenging task.

A relic from the past

The border tower in Cumlosen is not just a building; it is a testimony to the past that could tell many stories. With a functional architecture that is typical of border security systems in the former GDR, it rises above the landscape. On the ground floor there are also rooms that served as operating rooms and sanitary facilities, while a concrete staircase leads to former lounge areas and an observation point on the upper floors. Such properties, once part of an oppressive system, are now experiencing increasing interest from lovers of exceptional real estate who recognize the potential that lies within these relics.

The auction was organized by Deutsche Immobilienauktionen AG (DGA), which not only auctioned off the border tower on that day, but also a total of 62 properties from nine federal states at the same time. This format, where everyone had the opportunity to bid directly in the hall, by telephone or online, made participation around the border tower particularly exciting. The buyer now has two months to pay the purchase price and prepare for the challenges of the renovation.

Developing such properties is often lucrative if you have a good feel for the market. A little skill and attention to detail can be worth its weight in gold here. In fact, this border tower could not only offer an interesting housing option, but also be revived as a cultural heritage if someone with the necessary vision tackles it.

The auction and the associated sale of the border tower demonstrate a growing interest in historic properties. The once austere building may one day become a place that not only reminds us of the past, but also represents the future. We are excited to see what the new owner plans to do with this unusual location.
