A cyclist for hope: Oliver Trelenberg fulfills children's dreams
Oliver Trelenberg from Hagen, North Rhine-Westphalia, is on an impressive cycling adventure that has been going on since May 19th this year. He set out on a journey to cycle around 4,500 kilometers through Germany - a real project close to his heart. Trelenberg, who had to contend with a troubled past, transports around 30 kilograms of luggage on his bicycle. He covers up to 90 kilometers every day and his goal is to give courage and hope to seriously ill children and young people, while at the same time collecting donations for the Cologne association wünschdirwas e.V., which fulfills the heart's desires of these children. Nordkurier reports that Trelenberg has been going on bike tours every year since 2015 to share his own experiences with others.
The 57-year-old has experienced some lows in his life, including violence, alcohol addiction and cancer. In 2013, he was diagnosed with throat cancer but was able to beat the cancer. In terms of acting, Trelenberg has used the positive turn of his fate to inspire others. “It’s not about eating up the miles, it’s about showing others that you can get back on your feet after blows of fate,” he emphasizes. This philosophy is reflected in his commitment to speaking to city and community representatives about his project at every stop and distributing flyers about his initiative. [WDR].
A difficult legacy, great successes
Despite the challenges that came with his cancer - including health consequences such as shortness of breath - Trelenberg has learned to manage his symptoms. A more conscious cycling, slower and more steady, allows him to cover the route calmly. After his cancer diagnosis, he used cycling as a way to organize his thoughts and find peace. He has been alcohol-free since 2003, and after working alongside his diagnosis, he has dedicated himself to supporting others.
In recent years, Trelenberg has collected considerable sums through his bike tours: in 2022 it was over 11,600 euros, in 2023 almost 18,000 euros. This shows how important his mission is, both from a personal and societal perspective. Around 500,000 people in Germany are diagnosed with cancer every year, and many of them are children who are under great strain during treatment. The cancer portal informs that it is important to offer children a space in which they can talk about their illness. The challenges, especially for parents and family members, are enormous, and Trelenberg's commitment helps to alleviate some of this emotional pressure.
A call to action
Another highlight of his trip was the reception in Wittenberge, where Anastasija Zado offered him free accommodation and breakfast. Such small gestures are invaluable to Trelenberg during his journey. “I want people to know that there can be a new beginning even after difficult times,” says the cyclist. His next stop is planned for August 7th before he returns home to the Ruhr area.
With his tour, Trelenberg not only pushes the limits - he also encourages others to get involved in good things. His call is clear: together we can offer a glimmer of hope to those who need support most. His project is an example of how personal challenges can be turned into a positive influence for others.
