Big plans for Perleberg's ZOB: More parking spaces and new security!
The central bus station (ZOB) in Perleberg is facing a necessary renovation, which was decided at the last meeting of the urban development committee. The condition of the ZOB has deteriorated significantly in the last two years; the pavement is wavy and loose in places, affecting bus travel. In the almost 30-year history of the ZOB, which was built in 1995, the materials have reached their limits. A majority of city councilors agree: Something urgently needs to be done here. The Nordkurier reports on the various defects, which include, among other things, a high degree of sealing of the surfaces and a lack of a barrier-free concept.
The city has now developed concrete plans to not only repair the central bus station, but to sustainably improve it. Separate routes for cyclists and pedestrians are planned in the restructuring to avoid conflicts. In addition, buses will be arranged at an angle and the train station will have a direct connection. A new covered waiting hall with benches, a drinking water fountain and barrier-free toilet facilities will also be part of the design. The air quality should also be improved through an innovative air purification system with a moss wall.
Investments and funding
The total costs for the renovation amount to around 2.8 million euros, with 75% of the costs being eligible for funding. An eligible application has already been submitted to the State Office for Building and Transport on time, which is considered urgently necessary by MAZ. The mayor has emphasized that a full closure should be avoided during construction work in order to continue to provide bus bays.
The planned redesign also includes the creation of 45 parking spaces, including 4 with charging stations for electric vehicles. In the discussion about parking space planning, committee members expressed concerns and called for more parking space, which makes the current planning appear positive, but the parking situation remains a hot topic. The criticism of the high level of sealing is not unfounded, but it is also due to the obligation to reduce it according to federal law.
Accessibility and mobility of the future
A central point of the renovation is accessibility. The Public Transport Strategy 2030 stipulates that mobility offers must be accessible to everyone. This not only includes barrier-free design of the infrastructure at stops and stations, but also training of the vehicles. A well-thought-out concept for accessibility is now increasingly becoming the focus of planners.
On July 1st, the issue will be discussed again in the Finance Committee to discuss how to proceed and move forward with the plans. It remains to be seen whether citizens will be satisfied with the changes. In any case, it shows that the city of Perleberg has a good hand when it comes to taking the mobility needs of its residents into account and developing future-oriented solutions.
