Truck accident on B5: driver injured, road closed!
On Monday there was a serious truck accident on the B5 between Perleberg and Quitzow, which temporarily paralyzed the road. According to information from Northern Courier The accident happened around 9:45 a.m. when a 31-year-old truck driver left the road for reasons that are still unknown. The truck hit a tree, overturned and ended up on the side of the road. Tragically, the tree fell onto the road, further complicating the situation.
The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was immediately taken to hospital. A 64-year-old car driver, who was driving behind the truck, was unable to avoid the collision and was not injured in the collision with the tree. The police closed the road completely while the accident was being investigated to ensure the truck was safely recovered.
High property damage and salvage work
The total property damage amounts to around 150,000 euros. How Northern Courier reported, the recovery of the truck will be organized by the transport company's dispatchers and is expected to take place on the evening of June 16th between 6 p.m. and midnight.
Accidents involving goods vehicles appear to be a pressing problem in Germany. In 2020, there were almost 420 road traffic accidents with personal injury involving trucks, such as the Research information show. In around 59.8 percent of these cases, trucks were the main cause. Despite a decline in the number of accidents in recent decades, road transport with goods vehicles remains a risk. The risk of being seriously injured or even fatal in such an accident is more than four times higher for other road users than for the truck occupants.
Similar incidents and declines in accidents
Compared to previous years, the number of accidents involving personal injuries involving goods vehicles fell by almost 50 percent between 1995 and 2019, but the consequences of the accident remain serious. 61 percent of accidents occur in combination with cars, which underlines the need for further safety measures on the roads. The most common causes of accidents are failure to comply with the speed limit and errors when turning or turning.
An analysis of accident statistics for the period from 1992 to 2023, published by the Federal Statistical Office, shows that the number of accidents has tended to decrease overall in recent years, with a peak of 45,482 accidents in 1999. The number of accidents for 2020 is currently 29,882 people, with around 80 percent being other road users. Statista reports that trends in accident statistics should continue to be monitored to plan and improve future safety measures.
